The morning sun rose over the Isle of Serpents in a sweep of calm rose and molten gold, illuminating the glass-smooth surface of the Southern Azure Sea. The storm clouds that had shrouded the archipelago for three centuries were gone, swept away by the cosmic alignment of the three unified shards.
From the highest parapet of the Sunken Spire, the black-and-silver dragon banners of the Vanguard hung proudly, their heavy silk catching the gentle ocean breeze. Below, the sixty war-galleys rested in the calm sheltered waters of the cove, their crews hauling casks of fresh water and plundered imperial silver aboard for the voyage north.
In the private solar of the high sanctum, the scent of burning amber and crushed sea-lavender drifted from a copper brazier.
Aurelia stood before an arched opening looking out over the endless southern horizon, clad in a robe of pale cerulean silk trimmed with ermine. The three shards within her chest no longer warred against her mortal frame; they had settled into a radiant, self-sustaining nexus of cosmic ether that pulsed softly with the rhythm of her breath. A faint aura of liquid starlight shimmered around her fingertips, reflecting the calm ocean below.
A heavy, warm presence settled behind her.
Malakor’s arms slipped around her waist, drawing her back against the broad, unyielding wall of his chest. He was dressed in a simple black linen tunic, unlaced at the throat, his damp dark hair falling loosely across his forehead. The fierce, blood-soaked warlord who had breached the gates of Mor-Venn and shattered the bronze valves of the spire now held her with a slow, tender possessiveness that made her core melt.
"The fleet is provisioned," Malakor murmured, his lips grazing the sensitive curve where her neck met her shoulder, making her breath catch in her throat. "Grand Magus Elidor and the surviving magi have sworn the blood-oath to the High Throne. They will maintain the beacon here, but under our banners. The southern sea is completely secured."
Aurelia leaned back against him, letting her head rest against his shoulder, her hands covering his where they rested over her stomach. "And Sol-Vaelen?"
"General Kaelen sent word by swift galley this morning," Malakor replied, his deep voice a soothing vibration against her spine. "The capital remains peaceful under our garrison. The granaries are full, the eastern baronies have sent their hostages, and the populace has embraced the new order. The Solar Concord is nothing more than a memory."
He paused, his hands sliding slowly up the curve of her ribs, his fingers splaying possessively over her sides until his thumbs rested just beneath the swell of her breasts.
"Only one piece of the puzzle remains," he growled softly near her ear, his crimson-flecked eyes narrowing as he gazed northward across the water. "The Northern Wastes. The Frozen Citadel of Frost-Spire."
Aurelia nodded slowly, her fingers tracing the veins on the back of his hands. "The Fifth Shard. The Crown of the Void. It was hidden by the First Emperor in the permafrost beyond the Dragon’s Teeth mountains. The seat of the Frost-Lords."
Malakor turned her in his arms until she was facing him. He loomed over her, a dark and magnificent sovereign whose power was matched only by her own. His gaze roamed over her face, drinking in the breathtaking, unearthly beauty of her starlit eyes and the flushed curve of her parted lips.
"They think the northern blizzards will keep them safe," Malakor murmured, his thumb rising to trace the contour of her lower lip, his touch burning hot against her cool skin. "They do not know that winter itself answers to the woman in my arms."
Aurelia smiled, a slow, predatory curve of her lips that mirrored his own unyielding ambition. She reached up, burying her fingers in his thick, dark curls, pulling his head down until their lips were a breath apart.
"Let them prepare their walls, Malakor," she whispered fiercely. "We have conquered the rivers, the wastes, the marshes, and the sea. When we take the north, there will be no corner of this realm that does not bow to our throne."
Malakor’s eyes flared with an inferno of dark passion and absolute pride.
"Together, Aurelia," he growled against her mouth. "Until the stars themselves burn out."
His mouth crashed down onto hers with fierce, unbridled hunger, sealing their vow in a deep, all-consuming kiss that tasted of ocean wind, starlight, and the unbreakable promise of an empire united. Aurelia arched into his embrace, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck as the two sovereigns stood together atop the conquered world, their eyes turned toward the frozen horizon of their destiny.
