The grand spiraling stairwell of the Sunken Spire rose through three hundred paces of solid volcanic rock and polished lapis lazuli. With every landing they crested, the ambient atmospheric pressure mounted, pressing against their chests like the weight of deep ocean water. Arcs of indigo starlight crackled along the damp stone walls, grounding the wild, erratic discharges of the celestial relic hovering above.
At the summit of the tower lay the Celestial Observatory.
The chamber was an open-air rotunda open to the raging storm above, framed by colossal arches of carved star-stone that channeled the celestial winds. In the center of the amphitheater, suspended within a spinning gyroscope of concentric bronze rings inlaid with ancient runes, floated the Fourth Shard: the Astral Tear.
It was an ethereal, teardrop-shaped crystal of purest lapis and deep oceanic sapphire, weeping an unbroken aura of shimmering liquid starlight that cascaded down into an ornate basin of white marble before evaporating back into the air. The resonance was deafening—a high, pure harmonic chime that seemed to pull the tides of the surrounding sea upward toward the tower.
"The seal is active," Aurelia murmured as she stepped into the rotunda, her boots clicking softly against the marble floor.
Her dark hair whipped wildly in the storm winds blowing through the open arches, but her azure-and-silver eyes were locked on the spinning gyroscope. Beneath her breastplate, the two shards already bonded to her soul surged violently, beating against her ribs like caged birds desperate to reunite with their missing kin.
Malakor moved up behind her, his hand coming to rest firmly on her shoulder, anchoring her against the crushing etheric gale that whipped around the pedestal. His black plate radiated intense heat, creating a warm, protective envelope against the storm.
"The rings are forged from celestial bronze," Malakor observed, his dark eyes narrowing at the spinning mechanisms. "They are siphon-wards. The magi were using it to bleed the shard’s power into their defenses."
"Then we break the siphon," Aurelia replied.
She stepped toward the dais, drawing her twin star-iron daggers. She channeled the full, unyielding frost of her unified core into the blades, making them blaze with incandescent white-blue fire. With a swift, sweeping motion, she hurled both daggers into the pivot joints of the outer bronze ring.
The frost struck true. The extreme sub-zero cold instantly seized the spinning gears, locking the concentric rings in a cage of solid crystalline ice. The mechanism shuddered, groaning under its own momentum before seizing completely with a thunderous metallic shriek.
Freed from the siphon, the Astral Tear exploded with blinding light.
A tidal wave of concentrated celestial gravity detonated outward from the crystal, threatening to blast Aurelia off the edge of the open rotunda into the raging sea two hundred paces below.
Before the concussive wave could touch her, Malakor was there.
He slammed his armored body between her and the blast, driving his great sword deep into the marble floor to anchor them both. His arms locked around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest as the wave of sapphire light washed over them, scorching his black plate and tearing the wolf-pelt mantle from his shoulders.
Malakor’s teeth bared in a feral snarl as he weathered the storm, his crimson-flecked eyes burning with savage, unbreakable resolve. He held her against him with an iron grip that refused to yield an inch to the fury of heaven itself.
"Take it, Aurelia!" Malakor roared over the howling gale, his voice thick with raw power. "I hold the ground! Claim the tear!"
Aurelia looked up at him, her heart swelling with fierce, untamable passion for the warlord who stood as an unyielding wall against gods and storms alike. She raised her hands, reaching past his shoulders toward the floating crystal.
"Return to the core!" she commanded, her voice ringing with sovereign authority that echoed across the storm clouds.
The Astral Tear trembled. Sensing the presence of the two sister shards nestled within her soul, the crystal’s wild thrashing ceased. The weeping liquid light swirled inward, condensing into a single, blinding beacon of sapphire radiance that shot straight toward her chest.
The impact slammed into her sternum with the force of a falling star.
Aurelia cried out, her back arching violently against Malakor’s chest as the third fragment fused into her soul. Her vision shattered into a galaxy of swirling constellations, deep ocean trenches, and the blinding light of the First Dawn.
Three shards were now united: the First Core of the rift, the Void-Torn Shard of Ouros, and the Astral Tear of the Sunken Spire.
The celestial resonance reached critical mass. A shockwave of pure, crystalline light erupted from Aurelia’s body, sweeping outward across the entire Isle of Serpents.
The raging storm clouds above parted instantly, revealing a sky of deep velvet blue dusted with brilliant, diamond-bright stars. The churning whirlpools around the island flattened into calm, glassy water, and the wild tides of the Leviathan Straits settled into serene stillness.
Aurelia went limp in Malakor’s arms, her breathing shallow, her body trembling from the staggering influx of cosmic power.
Malakor pulled his sword from the floor, sheathing it with one hand while gathering her into his arms with the other. He sank onto one knee on the marble dais, pulling her against his broad chest, his large hand cupping her cheek with gentle, reverent desperation.
"Aurelia," he whispered, his voice rough and laced with rare emotion. "Are you with me?"
Aurelia opened her eyes.
They were no longer merely azure or silver; they held the deep, infinite blue of the night sky, flecked with the brilliant starlight of the heavens. A soft, radiant smile curved her lips as she looked up into his fierce, rugged face.
"I am here, Malakor," she whispered, her fingers trailing up to cup his jaw, feeling the heat of his skin ground her swirling consciousness. "The three are one. The tides of the world are ours."
Malakor let out a low, ragged breath of pure relief. A dark, triumphant smile spread across his lips as he leaned down, capturing her mouth in a deep, devastating kiss that tasted of starlight, salt, and absolute victory.
When he finally pulled away, his crimson-flecked eyes burned with an intoxicating, possessive fire.
"Three shards in your heart," he growled softly, lifting her into his arms as he stood upon the peak of the conquered spire. "One remains in the Frozen Citadel of the North. And when we take that... the entire world will bend its knee."
