The corridor beyond the Gate of Whispers did not descend into cool subterranean rock; it plunged into a sweltering subterranean cavern where the walls seemed alive. Veins of black volcanic glass pulsed with sluggish violet bioluminescence, weeping drops of oily moisture that hissed upon contact with the stone floor.
Every breath tasted of ancient ash, bitter incense, and the faint, sweet decay of old blood.
Malakor walked half a pace ahead of Aurelia, his great sword drawn and angled low. The abyssal fire within the blade was held in tight restraint, smoldering as a muted charcoal aura that bathed their path in flickering shadows. His senses were coiled like a steel spring, his gaze flicking between the alcoves carved into the basalt walls, where the desiccated, mummified remains of past Archons sat enshrined in seated lotus postures, their hollow eye sockets tracking the intruders with unsettling stillness.
"The resonance is sickening," Aurelia murmured under her breath.
Her fingers twitched at her hips, her frost-daggers humming with suppressed celestial energy. Her cold-sight was ablaze: the very stone was woven with necrotic tether-spells designed to slowly bleed an intruder's lifeforce into the citadel's central conduits.
"They built this place on top of an abyssal vent," Malakor rumbled, his voice vibrating deep in his broad chest. His free hand reached back, his fingers finding hers, entwining them in an ironclad grip. The searing heat of his palm surged through her leather gloves, acting as a fiery bulwark against the draining chill of the necrotic wards. "Stay close. If they try to separate us, tear the ceiling down."
"I have no intention of leaving your side," she whispered, squeezing his hand tightly before releasing it as their path opened into a colossal subterranean amphitheater.
The Chamber of the Bleeding Star was vast enough to swallow an entire imperial garrison.
High vaulted arches of fused black bone curved upward into impenetrable darkness. Suspended in the exact center of the cavern, held aloft by twelve massive iron chains forged from soul-steel, hovered a colossal sphere of jagged, crystalline obsidian—the Third Shard of the Celestial Core.
Unlike the pure azure radiance of the fragment Aurelia carried within her soul, this shard was terribly corrupted. It bled an undulating aura of deep violet plasma that dripped down into a sunken pool of dark, smoking liquid beneath it. The ethereal hum radiating from the crystal pressed against their eardrums like physical weight.
Surrounding the pool on concentric stone tiers stood sixty hooded acolytes of the Shadow Covenant, their heads bowed, chanting in a droning, guttural dialect that vibrated in the marrow of the bone.
At the edge of the pool stood High Archon Vhol, his ebony wyrm-mask turned toward them.
"You stand at the altar of the Unbroken Shadow," Vhol’s discordant chorus resonated through the chamber, echoing off the bone-arches. "You conquered the flesh of the empire, Malakor of the Ash. You shattered the crowns of petty men. But here, you are merely meat and marrow before the Primordial Will."
Vhol raised his iron staff toward the suspended crystal.
"The Third Shard hungers for royal blood to complete its rebirth," the Archon hissed. "You thought you came to claim a weapon. You came to be its vessel!"
The chanting of the acolytes reached a fever pitch.
Suddenly, the pool of dark liquid erupted. Thick, whip-like tendrils of liquid shadow surged from the basin, shooting across the stone floor toward them with blinding speed. At the same time, the twelve soul-steel chains groaned, the necrotic wards around the amphitheater snapping shut like the jaws of an iron trap, sealing the entrance behind them with a solid slab of obsidian.
"Aurelia, behind me!" Malakor roared.
He planted his feet and swung his great sword in a devastating upward arc. A wave of abyssal flame exploded from the black blade, incinerating the first volley of shadow tendrils into clouds of acrid smoke. But for every tendril he severed, three more erupted from the pool, their tips hardening into razor-sharp barbs of black glass.
"No more holding back," Aurelia hissed, her eyes igniting into blazing azure beacons.
She stepped to his flank, matching his stance. Channeling the celestial frost deep within her wellspring, she slammed both palms onto the basalt floor.
A cataclysmic shockwave of absolute zero tore through the cavern. The dark liquid pool froze instantly, its churning surface locking into a jagged lake of opaque, crystalline ice. The shadow tendrils were flash-frozen mid-strike, their momentum halting as frost raced up their lengths and shattered them into brittle black fragments.
The acolytes’ chant broke into shrieks of shock as the temperature plummeted forty degrees in a single heartbeat.
Malakor turned his burning crimson gaze upon High Archon Vhol, his lips peeling back in a savage, predatory snarl.
"Your altar is cold, priest," Malakor’s voice thundered, vibrating with apocalyptic fury. "Now let us see if your blood can warm it!"
