The ascent toward the plateau of Ouros was a tortuous climb along the Serpent's Path—a narrow, wind-scoured ledge chiseled directly out of sheer black volcanic basalt. Below the precipice, the Ashen Wastes fell away into a hazy sea of sulfurous yellow fog, where the skeletal remains of ancient leviathans looked like broken driftwood in a dead ocean.
The air grew thin and bitter, carrying the metallic tang of ozone and ancient etheric radiation.
At the summit of the trail, the gorge widened into an amphitheater of smooth, polished obsidian. Towering above them rose the Black Citadel of Ouros. Its architecture was unlike anything built by the mortal lords of the Solar Concord; the stone seemed grown rather than carved, rising in twisted, needle-like minarets that pierced the violet-bruised sky. Every surface was inscribed with serpentine sigils that glowed with a faint, sickly luminescence, pulsing in time with the heartbeat of the Third Shard hidden within its depths.
Before the citadel stood the Gate of Whispers.
Two colossal slabs of petrified bone and black iron barred the entrance, sealed not with physical chains, but with a shimmering veil of corrupted purple ether that crackled with enough lethal power to vaporize an armored legion.
Malakor signaled the riders to halt at fifty paces.
"Captain Dennis," Malakor commanded without looking back, his gaze locked onto the shimmering barrier. "Establish a defensive redoubt across the canyon neck. If anything descends from the crags behind us, cut it down. If the citadel erupts in flame... hold your ground until we return."
"Understood, Sovereign," Dennis answered, striking his fist over his heart before wheeling his mount to organize the perimeter.
Aurelia dismounted, her boots clicking against the glass-slick floor of the plateau. She stepped to Malakor’s side as he dismounted, his massive frame looming beside her like an unmovable bastion.
"The gate’s barrier is tied directly to the ley line," Aurelia observed, her azure eyes tracking the violet pulses of light dancing across the bone-carved portal. "Force alone will trigger a feedback loop that could collapse the cliff face beneath our feet."
Malakor drew his abyssal great sword, letting the point rest against the stone. "Then how do we open it?"
Before Aurelia could reply, the veil of violet ether parted like water, swirling inward to form a shimmering vortex.
From the shadows of the arched threshold stepped a solitary figure.
He was draped in voluminous robes of tattered black silk, bordered with silver thread tarnished to lead. His face was entirely hidden behind an ebony mask carved into the likeness of a weeping wyrm, with weeping slits that revealed nothing but hollow blackness beneath. In his emaciated, grey-skinned hand, he clutched a stave of twisted blackened iron topped with a crystal orb that trapped a swirl of dark, smoky essence.
"The Usurpers of Sol-Vaelen," a voice hissed from behind the mask. It was not a single man’s voice, but a discordant chorus of echoes, scraping against the mind like rusted iron on stone. "You bring the stink of the western thrones to our sanctuary."
"We bring the blade that executed your Emperor," Malakor retorted, his voice a low, threatening rumble that rolled across the plateau with terrifying authority. He took two deliberate steps forward, the heat of his abyssal aura flaring bright enough to make the air shimmer around him. "You summoned us with promises of an audience and the Third Shard. Stand aside, priest, before I mount your head on your own gates."
The priest did not flinch, though his skeletal fingers tightened on his staff.
"I am High Archon Vhol of the Shadow Covenant," the chorus replied. "We bowed neither to the Solar Concord nor to the mad Emperor Valerius. We kept the shard safe from mortal hands while the world burned in its petty squabbles. But you... you carry the taint of the First Core, woman of frost."
Vhol’s mask turned fully toward Aurelia.
"You froze the rift at Mount Sorrow," Vhol continued, his tone laced with venomous fascination. "You disturbed the cosmic equilibrium. The Veil weeps, and its tears poison the marrow of the world. Enter, if you dare face the judgment of Ouros. But know this: the shard does not yield to conquerors. It yields only to sacrifice."
With a sweep of his tattered sleeve, Vhol turned and glided back through the doorway. The veil of violet ether did not close; it remained parted, an open maw inviting them into the black depths of the mountain.
Malakor’s gauntleted hand came down firmly upon Aurelia’s shoulder, pulling her slightly back toward him. His dark eyes were fixed on the doorway, burning with lethal calculation.
"It is a trap, Aurelia," he murmured, his voice dropping into that deep, husky register that belonged only to them. "The entire citadel is saturated with their poison. Once we cross that threshold, we are on their altar."
Aurelia turned her head, looking up into his fierce, unyielding gaze. A slow, reckless smile curved her lips, her eyes blazing sapphire with cold, celestial power. She raised her hand, resting her palm against the steel plate over his chest, feeling the wild, untamable beat of his heart.
"They think to lure wolves into a trap, Malakor," she whispered, her fingers curling against his armor. "They forget that wolves do not come to negotiate. We come to feed."
A dark, feral grin broke across Malakor’s rugged features. His arm slid around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest for one fierce, bruising heartbeat, his forehead pressing against hers.
"Let us show them how wolves feast," he growled.
Together, their shoulders touching, fire and frost walking as one, they crossed the threshold into the dark belly of the Black Citadel.
