The night air shattered under the clamor of iron. From the eastern sally port of Mor-Thal, eight hundred heavy horsemen had poured forth under the shroud of mist, their lances tipped with alchemical fire intended to turn the Vanguard’s siege engines into towering pyres.
When Aurelia and Malakor emerged from the command pavilion, the outer camp was already a vortex of noise and flashing steel. General Kaelen’s spearmen held their ground with admirable grit, but the shock of the flaming cavalry was threatening to buckle the left flank near the supply wagons.
"They brought Greek fire and pitch," Aurelia observed, the cold mist swirling violently around her outstretched hands as she assessed the line.
"Then let them burn in their own greed," Malakor growled.
He drew his abyssal great sword, the runes along the fuller igniting with a baleful obsidian light that consumed the surrounding shadows. With a single, earth-shaking leap powered by dark ether, Malakor plunged directly into the center of the charging cavalry.
His descending strike split the lead rider’s horse and breastplate in a deafening eruption of black sparks. The shockwave flipped the mounts beside him, their riders thrown violently into the muddy turf. Without breaking stride, Malakor whirled, a whirlwind of tempered iron and abyssal fury, cutting a bloody swath through the mounted raiders. His dark blade tore through armor and shield with indifferent savagery, leaving a trail of shattered steel and broken men in his wake.
Above the fray, Aurelia channeled the glacial tempest deep within her soul.
Stepping atop an overturned supply cart, she thrust her hands toward the flooded ditch that separated the raiders from their retreat route. A pulse of blinding azure light exploded from her fingertips. The water in the trenches did not merely freeze; it detonated into razor-sharp spikes of thick ice that shot ten paces into the air, impaling the rear guard and sealing the sally port shut behind them.
Cut off from their city walls, panic took root in the raiders' hearts.
"Rally to me!" the enemy commander bellowed, waving a flaming broadsword. "Break the witch, and the ice will shatter!"
A dozen mounted veterans wheeled their chargers, spurring them directly toward the cart where Aurelia stood.
She did not flinch. Drawing her frost-daggers, she let the temperature plummet to near absolute stillness around her. But before the first horse could reach her, a shadow descended like an executioner’s axe.
Malakor intercepted the charge with brutal velocity. He drove his shoulder into the leading stallion, the sheer kinetic force of his dark ether throwing horse and rider sideways. His great sword arced in a clean, horizontal sweep that severed two lances and opened the breastplate of the next attacker.
In a heartbeat, he stood before Aurelia, a living fortress of blackened steel and unyielding wrath. He reached back, his free hand locking around her waist to pull her safely behind him, his broad back an impenetrable shield against the chaos.
"None touch her," Malakor’s voice thundered across the field, deep and resonant with an ancient authority that made the remaining horses rear and buck in terror.
Aurelia stepped to his flank, refusing to cower. Standing shoulder to shoulder, their powers synchronized—his dark flame superheating the air while her frost chilled it, creating a catastrophic vortex of elemental pressure.
Aurelia swept her daggers downward. An avalanche of frost erupted across the ground, freezing the enemy steeds in their tracks, their hooves cemented to the freezing mire. Malakor followed with an overhead cleave that released a wave of dark fire across the frozen field. The sudden shock of extreme cold meeting infernal heat caused the enemy's armor and weapons to crack and shatter like brittle glass.
The remaining raiders dropped their fractured weapons, falling to their knees in the mud as Kaelen’s spears closed the circle around them.
Silence descended over the smoking lines, broken only by the groans of the wounded and the crackle of lingering frost.
Malakor planted his blade into the frozen mud and turned to Aurelia. His face was streaked with soot and blood, his chest rising and falling heavily. His dark eyes softened only as they scanned her, searching for injuries. Finding none, his tension broke into a dark, satisfied grin.
He stepped close, his gauntleted hand gently framing her face despite the blood on his armor, his thumb wiping a speck of frost from her brow.
"You sealed their coffin before they could even draw their second breath," he murmured, his voice rich with fierce admiration.
Aurelia leaned her cheek into his palm, her heart pounding with the lingering rush of combat and the intimate heat passing between them.
"And you shattered the lid," she replied softly. She looked toward the towering, silent walls of Mor-Thal, where Archduke Cedric’s banners now hung limp and defeated against the ramparts. "The ditches are frozen solid. Tomorrow, we walk across their moat... and take their city."
