The descent into the valley of Val-Mora was swift and merciless. Behind the vanguard, the ridge smoldered with the lingering embers of Malakor’s abyssal flame, while ahead, the sprawling outer wards of Mor-Thal lay bare beneath the darkening sky.
Mor-Thal was an ancient bastion, its curtain walls chiseled from dark porphyry stone and reinforced by heavy iron bastions. Yet its true defense lay in the concentric rings of flooded ditches and earthworks surrounding its outer gates—trenches designed to bog down heavy cavalry and siege engines under a relentless rain of catapult stone.
By twilight, the forward host of Val-Roc had established their siege lines three hundred paces from the outer ditch. Watchfires flickered to life along the trenches like fallen stars, casting dancing shadows over the grim faces of Kaelen’s spearmen.
Inside the command pavilion, a single brazier fought against the encroaching chill. Aurelia stood over the map table, tracing the layout of Mor-Thal’s defenses with a slender, pale finger. Her breath drifted in faint wisps, her celestial core settling after the fury at the ridge, though an electric restlessness still crackled beneath her skin.
Footsteps sounded at the tent flap. Malakor entered, stripping his heavy gauntlets and casting them onto an oak trestle. His dark cuirass was etched with soot, and the heat rolling off his broad chest filled the narrow space, driving back the winter cold like an open furnace.
"The trenches are flooded with canal runoff from the eastern reservoirs," Aurelia said without looking up, her gaze fixed on the map. "Cedric believes he has created a moat too broad for your siege towers to cross."
Malakor approached the table, moving with the quiet, predatory grace that belonged to a seasoned warlord. He stopped behind her, so close she could feel the radiating warmth of his body against her back.
"Let him believe it," Malakor murmured, his hands coming to rest on the edge of the table on either side of her, effectively trapping her within his embrace. "He does not understand what you can freeze, nor what my flame can shatter."
Aurelia tilted her head back, her dark hair brushing his chest. She met his gaze, finding the smoldering embers within his crimson eyes. The proximity made her blood hum with a sudden, potent heat that had nothing to do with war.
"You look at that fortress the same way you look at me when you want to take something," she whispered, her lips curling into a provocative curve.
A low, rumbling chuckle vibrated deep within his chest. Malakor leaned down, his mouth grazing the sensitive curve where her neck met her shoulder, making her breath catch in her throat. His hands left the table, sliding around her waist, pulling her firmly against the unyielding wall of his torso.
"You are not a fortress to be conquered, Aurelia," he growled against her skin, his lips parting to press a searing kiss beneath her jaw. "You are the storm that walks beside me. But when I want you... I take no prisoners."
His hands gripped her hips, shifting her until she turned fully to face him. The map was forgotten beneath them. Aurelia tangled her fingers in his thick, dark hair, pulling him down until their mouths collided with an urgency that stole the air from the room.
It was a fierce, demanding kiss—hard, hot, and laced with the adrenaline of battle and the promise of impending victory. Malakor lifted her effortlessly, seating her on the edge of the heavy table as his hands found the laces of her leather bodice, freeing her collar to expose the pale, gleaming skin of her throat to his fevered touch.
Aurelia arched into him, a soft, ragged gasp escaping her lips as his mouth trailed down to the hollow of her collarbone. Her hands dug into his muscular shoulders, her frost-tinged aura clashing and melding with his infernal heat in a tempest of pure sensation that left them both trembling with hunger.
Outside, the heavy resonance of a war horn broke through the night.
Malakor stilled, though he did not pull away immediately. His forehead rested against hers, his chest heaving, his dark eyes burning with reluctant restraint.
"Cedric’s sally port," Aurelia murmured, her voice breathless and rough with desire, her fingers lingering against his stubbled jaw.
"A counter-raid," Malakor rasped, pressing one last, bruising kiss to her lips before straightening. He caught her hand, kissing her knuckles before stepping back and retrieving his gauntlets. "They hope to burn our siege lines while we rest."
Aurelia slid down from the table, quickly refastening her tunic, her eyes flashing with a deadly, cold light.
"Then let us remind them," she said, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper, "that the dark belongs to us."
