The recovery skiff Astra-Vanguard carried Seraphina and Kaelen out of the Silent Trench, returning them to the grand hangar bay of the Sol-Invictus amidst the thunderous applause of the Gilded Wing.
In Kaelen’s gloved palm, the Pearl of the Void-Siren pulsed with a soft, hypnotic iridescence.
It was an opalescent sphere of petrified psychic ether, swirling with veins of midnight violet and starlight silver.
As soon as they crossed into the flagship’s atmosphere, the residual static and acoustic distortion that had plagued the crew melted away, replaced by an extraordinary, profound mental clarity.
"It acts as a psychic filter," Seraphina observed, leaning over the diagnostic cradle in the primary science lab where the pearl was secured.
Her Astral Empress Armor gleamed under the sterile white lights, her golden crescent mark glowing warmly at her throat.
Her paramedic mind cataloged its neurological effects:
"Xylara used this pearl to project mental agony, but in its purified state, it neutralizes psychic feedback, neural scramblers, and telepathic illusions. It will render our entire fleet immune to mental interference."
"More than that," Kaelen Vance murmured, stepping up directly behind her.
His large, warm hands settled over the curve of her waist, drawing her back against his broad, muscular chest.
He bent his head, burying his nose in the soft curve of her neck, inhaling the sweet, grounding fragrance of cedar and dawn that was uniquely hers.
His ragged, deep breath washed over her skin, sending an intoxicating tremor of pleasure racing along her nerves.
"The pearl resonates with the etheric frequencies of the deep cosmos. Integrated into our comm-relays, it allows instantaneous telepathic communication across light-years, bypassing all conventional jamming fields."
"Which means no more severed communications," Seraphina said, tilting her head back against his shoulder to look into his molten silver eyes.
She raised a hand, her slender fingers tracing the line of his scarred jawline, feeling the hard, masculine set of his jaw relax beneath her touch.
"We fight as a unified mind."
"As we always should," Kaelen growled huskily.
His gaze darkened with that familiar, possessive hunger that always made her pulse flutter.
He turned her within his arms until her hips were pressed firmly against the edge of the examination console, trapping her between his powerful frame and the gleaming steel.
His mouth found hers in a slow, deep, devastatingly sensual kiss that stole the air from her lungs.
His lips were hot, demanding, tasting of victory and unyielding devotion, reminding her of the fierce, untamed fire that burned between them even in the cold reaches of the extragalactic void.
When they finally broke apart, flushed and breathless, Seraphina rested her forehead against his, a quiet laugh escaping her lips.
"General Aurelius is waiting on the bridge, Vance."
"Let the old warhorse wait five more minutes," Kaelen rumbled with a wicked smirk, stealing one more lingering kiss before stepping back and offering his arm with regal grace.
"Shall we see what the Codex reveals next, my Queen?"
On the central command bridge, the atmosphere was electric with renewed confidence.
The installation of the Pearl of the Void-Siren into the flagship’s central array sent a shimmering silver-violet pulse through every console, linking all two hundred star-dreadnoughts into an unbreakable neural mesh.
At the central hololith, the Codex of the Nine chimed softly.
Four runes now burned cold and dormant:
The Sovereign of Iron and Rot— Extinguished.
Vorgon, the War-Maker— Extinguished.
Morvath, the Weaver of Frozen Time— Extinguished.
Xylara, the Weaver of Whispers— Extinguished.
Five runes remained active.
Suddenly, the fifth rune flared with blinding, emerald-green radiance, projecting a massive three-dimensional star-chart into the air.
It depicted a colossal, dying emerald star enveloped in a dense ring of petrified, petrified dragon-bone: the Smaragdine Grave of the Wyrm-Father.
"The fifth Harbinger," General Aurelius announced, his voice tight with awe as he read the ancient text.
"Nidhogg-Prime, the Devourer of Roots. An elder cosmic wyrm ten leagues long, slumbering at ninety percent awakeness within the necrotic core of a poisoned star."
Seraphina straightened, her amber eyes burning with sovereign fire.
"A dragon of the void. Sounds like it's time to see whose fire burns hotter."
Kaelen’s shadow-wings flared slightly behind his back, a lethal, breathtaking smile spreading across his handsome face as he drewGloom-Weaver an inch from its scabbard.
"Set course for the Smaragdine Grave, General," Kaelen commanded. "Let us hunt a wyrm."
