The fall was not down. It was inward, outward, and through.
Reality peeled away like scorched parchment. The scent of Chicago—rain on sulfurous asphalt, diesel exhaust, the comforting dust of ancient paper—was ripped from Seraphina’s senses in a violent rush of decompression. In its place rushed a void so cold it turned the moisture on her eyelashes into needles of frost.
Gravity ceased to exist. There was only the howling roar of an ethereal hurricane, the deafening scream of atmospheric boundaries tearing apart, and the iron-hard cage of Kaelen Vance’s arms locked around her ribs.
"Breathe, Seraphina!" Kaelen’s voice didn't travel through the air; it resonated directly inside her skull, deep, commanding, and ragged with physical strain. "Look at me. Do not look into the drift!"
Sera couldn't help it. Her eyes snapped open against the blinding vortex.
They were falling through a colossal rift between dimensions. Around them swirled ribbons of fractured light—shards of mortal skylines, spinning galaxies, and dark, oily tides of pure void-matter writhing with weeping, blind faces. The psychic pressure was catastrophic, like descending ten thousand leagues beneath the ocean without a hull. Her mortal eardrums screamed; blood began to trickle warm from her left nostril.
Kaelen shifted his grip, pulling her head flush against the hollow of his armored throat. With his free hand, he swungGloom-Weaverin wide, defensive arcs through the metaphysical gale.
Living darkness erupted from the blade, spinning into a spherical cocoon of shadow-steel that sealed them inside a pocket of calm amidst the howling chaos. The violet fire along the sword’s fuller burned fiercely, pushing back the crawling void-tendrils that snapped at them like starving lampreys.
Beneath her cheek, through the cold plates of his gorget, Sera felt the thunderous, violent rhythm of his heart.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
The Twin-Star mark on her wrist was locked in a blinding resonance with the glyph on his chest. It burned not with the agony of a brand, but with a searing, intoxicating warmth that spread through her veins, counteracting the freezing vacuum of the void. Every breath he took seemed to feed oxygen into her collapsing lungs.
"What were those things?" she gasped against his neck, her fingers digging desperately into the leather seams of his back. "What did that blind monster call me?"
"You are the catalyst of an extinct war, little bird," Kaelen growled, his jaw tight as he channeled massive torrents of mana through the blade to maintain their descent trajectory. Sweat beaded on his aristocratic brow, instantly freezing into silver crystals. "And Vane will tear down both worlds to put your blood in an imperial chalice."
Above them, through the translucent shell of his shadow-barrier, a horrific shriek ripped through the drift.
Inquisitor Vane had not stayed behind.
The blind inquisitor was descending through the rift like an obsidian raptor, riding a wave of sickly green witchlight. His tattered gray silks whipped around his skeletal frame, and in his hands gleamed the twinSoul-Shears—curved, jagged blades of pale meteoric iron that drank the ambient light around them.
Behind him surged five of the lead-masked bloodhounds, their clawed boots kicking off the swirling dimensional debris as they closed the distance with terrifying velocity.
"You cannot outrun the Obsidian Decree, Commander!" Vane’s voice pierced the roaring void like needles through silk. "The threshold between worlds is closed to the unclean! Hand over the mortal, and your execution before the High King will be swift!"
Vane crossed the shears in front of his chest and struck them together.
CLANG.
The sonic shockwave shattered the dimensional currents. A shockwave of pure, nullifying cold-iron resonance slammed into Kaelen's shadow-shield.
Cracks of blinding white fractured the protective sphere. Kaelen grunted, a thick line of black blood spilling over his lower lip as the magical backlash struck his core. The shadow-cocoon shattered into dispersing wisps of smoke, exposing them to the raw, killing pressure of the crossing.
An assassin lunged through the breach, short-blade aimed at Sera’s throat.
Kaelen didn't parry with his sword; he thrust his armored forearm directly into the blade's path. The poisoned iron tore through his leather sleeve, gouging deep into his flesh. Without a flicker of hesitation, Kaelen's gauntleted hand snapped shut around the assassin's wrist, twisting it until bone splintered through black mail, then drove his forehead into the creature's lead mask.
The mask caved. The assassin spiraled off into the endless void, swallowed by the weeping faces in the dark.
"Kaelen, your arm!" Sera cried, seeing the black, sizzling venom smoking against his skin.
"It is nothing," he snarled through bared fangs. But the bond told her the truth: the cold-iron poison was burning through his nervous system like liquid acid, slowing his reflexes, threatening to drag his conscious mind under.
Another shockwave from Vane's shears ripped through the air, shearing away the tail of Kaelen's dark cloak.
They were losing momentum. Beneath them, the swirling rift was narrowing into a razor-sharp funnel of obsidian crags—the planetary threshold of Aethelgard. If they hit the boundary wards at this velocity while poisoned, they would be pulverized into red mist against the atmosphere.
"The gate runes," Sera gasped, her mind suddenly racing through the Latin and ancient Germanic texts she had translated in her loft. Her scholar’s memory flared with clarity. "TheCodex Aethelgard... the First Seal was anchored by solar resonance! The barrier doesn't recognize your shadow magic while it’s tainted by void-poison—it thinks you're an invader!"
Kaelen’s silver eyes snapped down to hers, sharp and desperate. "Can you channel the light again?"
"I don't know how!" she shouted against the roaring wind. "It was an accident—it happened when I thought you were going to die!"
Kaelen’s lips parted in a fierce, breathless grimace. In the middle of an apocalyptic dimensional freefall, with death snapping at their heels, a dark, wicked spark flashed in his eyes.
"Then do not let me die, Seraphina," he murmured.
He leaned down and crushed his mouth against hers.
The shock of his lips was a conflagration.
His mouth was demanding, possessive, tasting of iron, frost, and dark, ancient hunger. The physical contact blew open the floodgates of the Twin-Star bond with catastrophic force.
A supernova of incandescent solar fire detonated from the core of Sera’s soul, racing through her veins, into her chest, and pouring straight through their joined lips into Kaelen’s poisoned core.
The cold-iron venom sizzling in his arm was incinerated in a microsecond by the pure, uncorrupted light of the Sunblood. Kaelen roared against her mouth—not in pain, but in the terrifying, intoxicating ecstasy of divine power flooding his veins.
Wings of pure, blinding solar radiance erupted from Sera’s shoulder blades, casting arcs of brilliant gold across the endless void. At the same instant, Kaelen’s shadow-magic mutated, the black smoke wrapping around her golden light, weaving together into an impenetrable armor of eclipse-fire.
Vane shrieked, shielding his blind face as the divine light burned his flesh. "The Solar Rebirth! Kill them!Kill them now!"
It was too late.
With the combined, unholy velocity of Sun and Shadow, Kaelen and Sera pierced the final boundary of the Veil like a fallen star.
The void vanished.
The sky tore open into a twilight vault of bruised purple and indigo, dominated by two colossal crescent moons hanging over an endless horizon of jagged, bioluminescent obsidian spires.
They were in Aethelgard.
And they were falling from the clouds directly toward the razor-sharp crags of the Night Court’s outer fortress.
