The weekend at the country estate dragged on. Despite their truce, Sophie and Ethan's interactions were still filled with subtle tension. They managed to avoid any major arguments, but the undercurrent of their unresolved issues remained.
It was late Sunday afternoon when they found themselves alone again, standing outside on the terrace, overlooking the garden. Sophie leaned against the stone railing, her mind far away. Ethan approached her quietly, his usual confidence tempered by something more somber in his demeanor.
"Hey," he said softly, his voice uncharacteristically low.
Sophie turned, eyebrows raised. "What is it now, Ethan?"
He hesitated, staring at her with an unreadable expression. "I need to ask you something. And I need you to be honest."
Sophie felt her pulse quicken. "Okay... go ahead."
"Do you... like him?" Ethan's question hung in the air between them, heavy with unspoken emotions.
Sophie frowned, confused. "What are you talking about?"
"The guy you were talking to at the auction," he clarified, voice tight. "The artist. You seemed... close."
Sophie blinked, realizing what he meant. "Are you seriously jealous of that?" she asked incredulously. "He was just a friend. Someone I had a conversation with about art."
Ethan's jaw tightened. "I'm sorry. I guess I just..." He paused, rubbing his temples. "I overreacted."
Sophie sighed, frustration creeping into her tone. "Ethan, this is getting ridiculous. Why are you even concerned? This whole arrangement isn't real, remember?"
"I know," he said, his voice almost a whisper. "But I can't help feeling like... like I want all your attention, all the time. Even though I know that's not fair."
Sophie met his gaze, her heart pounding. "You don't get to control that, Ethan."
He looked down, the weight of his words sinking in. "I know. I'm sorry."
They stood there in silence, the tension still thick but now punctuated by something else - something closer to understanding.
Sophie turned away first, her voice soft. "You can't keep pushing me like this, Ethan. We can't keep doing this."
"Maybe," he said quietly, "we need to figure out what we really want... without the games."
And for the first time that weekend, Sophie wondered if maybe they were on the verge of something more than just a forced truce.
But she wasn't ready to let herself believe it - yet.
