The countryside stretched endlessly as Sophie stared out the car window, her mind occupied by thoughts of the upcoming weekend. Their parents had arranged for a getaway at a luxurious country estate, a "bonding retreat," as her mother had called it. Sophie couldn't decide if it was meant to be romantic or simply manipulative. Either way, the idea of being trapped with Ethan in close quarters made her stomach churn.
Ethan, seated beside her in the back seat, seemed entirely at ease. He was scrolling through his phone, his lips twitching in amusement every so often, likely at some inside joke he wouldn't bother to explain.
"Enjoying yourself?" Sophie asked, her tone dry.
Ethan glanced up, his smirk firmly in place. "Always. You should try it sometime."
Sophie rolled her eyes and returned her attention to the scenery.
The estate was breathtaking, a sprawling manor surrounded by lush gardens and rolling hills. The moment they arrived, Sophie felt an urge to wander off into the wilderness and stay there until the weekend was over.
Their first activity, naturally, was a formal dinner.
"You'll be seated together," Sophie's mother informed them with a bright smile.
"Of course we will," Sophie muttered under her breath.
Ethan held her chair out for her, his grin more teasing than polite. "After you."
"Don't push your luck," Sophie whispered as she sat.
Dinner was a performance. Sophie and Ethan exchanged pleasantries with their parents and the estate's hosts, but beneath the surface, their tension simmered. Ethan, ever the charmer, fielded compliments and shared anecdotes with an ease that only infuriated Sophie further.
As dessert was served, Sophie excused herself. She needed air - or, at least, a moment away from Ethan's infuriatingly perfect facade.
She found herself wandering into the estate's library, a grand room filled with ancient books and overstuffed chairs. Sophie ran her fingers along the spines of the books, taking comfort in the familiar scent of aged paper and leather bindings.
"Escaping already?" Ethan's voice broke the silence.
Sophie turned to see him leaning against the doorway, his tie loosened and his hands in his pockets.
"What do you want, Ethan?" she asked, her tone weary.
"To make sure you're okay," he replied, surprising her. "You looked… tense back there."
Sophie let out a humorless laugh. "Tense? That's putting it mildly. This whole trip is ridiculous."
Ethan walked into the room, stopping a few feet away from her. "You're not wrong. But if we keep fighting it, we're just going to make things harder on ourselves."
"And what do you suggest?" Sophie asked, crossing her arms.
Ethan shrugged. "Maybe stop seeing each other as enemies. Start acting like allies instead."
Sophie studied him for a moment, searching his face for any sign of insincerity. To her surprise, she found none.
"Allies?" she repeated.
Ethan nodded. "At least for the weekend. A temporary ceasefire. What do you say?"
Sophie hesitated before letting out a reluctant sigh. "Fine. But only because I don't have the energy to fight you right now."
Ethan smiled, holding out his hand. "Truce?"
Sophie shook it briefly, her grip firm. "Truce."
For the first time, the tension between them seemed to ease. But as they returned to the others, Sophie couldn't shake the feeling that their truce was as fragile as the porcelain plates they had just dined on.
