Chapter 29 - "The Tension Between the Lines"
Scene: Monday Morning - Open Floor, Closed Emotions
The office felt different.
After the gala chaos, the poisoned drinks, and Jasmine's fake tears, everything settled into a suspicious calm. Everyone was present, but nobody was present. Smiles were painted on, conversations clipped.
I sat at my desk, answering emails with one hand and clutching Elias's coffee with the other - the exact vanilla oat milk latte he knew I loved.
"Thanks, babe," I murmured when he passed it to me, but we didn't linger.
He barely looked at me.
My heart dropped.
Scene: Elias's Office - Unspoken Words
Later that day, I couldn't take it anymore. I walked straight into his office, shut the door, and locked it. He didn't flinch. Didn't look up.
"Are we not going to talk about it?"
Elias finally looked up. His eyes were darker than I remembered - not angry, but haunted.
"That night… the gala… you disappeared."
I swallowed.
"I was dealing with security. I was trying to find out who spiked the drinks."
He pushed back from his desk and stood.
"I saw you outside. With Devon. You didn't look like you were 'dealing' with anything."
My breath caught. That night flashed behind my eyes. Devon touching my arm. Whispering apologies. Me… not pulling away fast enough.
Scene: The Fight We Needed
"Elias, that meant nothing. You're the only one I - "
"Then why did you let him get close?" His voice cracked with betrayal.
"Because I was scared, alright?! Everything was falling apart and for one second, I forgot who the hell I was!"
Silence.
Then he stepped forward, backed me against the door, his breath heavy on my neck.
"Don't ever forget again."
Scene: Making Up in the Office... Again
The air between us snapped like a live wire.
He grabbed my face and kissed me like he was trying to remind me who we were - who we'd always been. I kissed him back harder. Clothes were no longer barriers. His suit jacket hit the floor. My blouse was halfway undone.
"You always were trouble," he whispered against my skin.
"Then why do you keep inviting me in?" I challenged.
"I'm addicted to the way you taste."
My legs wrapped around him as he lifted me onto the filing cabinet, making love to me with the same passion we fought with - wild, messy, and real.
Scene: Afterglow
He didn't say sorry. Neither did I.
Because love isn't clean. It's not polite or always easy.
But it's real.
And sometimes, real feels like your knees shaking in an office you swore you'd never mix business with again.
