The hospital room felt like a frozen nightmare.
Fluorescent lights buzzed above me, cold and unrelenting. The walls were bare, sterile, and almost mocking in their emptiness. Machines beeped steadily beside my bed, each sound a reminder that something was wrong - terribly wrong.
I lay there, weak and trembling, my mind foggy from pain and medication. Every breath felt heavy, like I was trying to inhale through water. Nurses moved around me quickly, their faces etched with concern, but they avoided my eyes. That silence was louder than any alarm.
She sat in the corner of the room, her hands clasped together, rocking slightly. At first, I took it as worry - the love of a devoted wife watching her husband fight for his life. She didn't speak much, just stared at the floor, tears slipping quietly down her cheeks.
Hours crawled by until finally, the doctor came in. His expression alone made my stomach drop. He didn't have to say a word for me to know that whatever he was about to tell me would change everything.
"We've run every test we could," he began carefully, his voice steady but strained.
"There's… something deeply wrong. Your body is shutting down, and we need to act quickly."
The room spun. His words echoed like a death sentence, bouncing off those cold, empty walls. I reached for her hand, desperate for comfort.
But when our eyes met, something shifted inside me.
There was no devastation in her gaze.
No heartbreak.
What I saw was something that chilled me to my core - relief.
It was as if she'd been waiting for this moment.
And in that instant, my entire world shattered.
