Sarhea⊕ found her counterpart in the endless white desert of the Nexus, a placeless gap between worlds.
▣Sarhea was waiting, five attendants stood in a silent crescent behind her, their forms shifting smoke, polished bone, and cold iron.
“You are late,” ▣Sarhea said, her voice a low cello note resonating in the marrow.
“I was admiring the accretion of a new nebula in Sector Seven,” countered Sarhea⊕, her own voice a clear chime. “Its birthing-song was particularly complex.”
Her own five attendants stood arranged like points of a star behind her, beings of woven sunlight, solidified crystal, and calm water.
“Sentiment for the unthinking,” ▣Sarhea waved a dismissive hand, a gesture that swallowed the light around it.
“Shall we proceed? My Charnel Lord grows restless.”
From her shadowed ranks, a hulking figure of riveted black plate shifted, a low grind echoing from within its helm.
Sarhea's⊕ Paladin of Dawn, a being of glistening alloy and serene purpose, did not move, but the air around him grew subtly warmer.
“Very well,” Sarhea⊕ said. “The arbitration. The disputed system, 186f.”
A silence fell, not empty, but heavy with the weight of their opposed natures.
“A test,” proposed Sarhea⊕. “A direct intervention within the arbitration parameters. Not with our full might, but through our champions. Let the system itself decide which force it is more receptive to, now, at this crossroads.”
The cavernous chamber echoed and twisted with the low hum of clashing energy.
Shelomo⊕ who stood framed in soft, celestial light, traced a circle in the air with a bone-white finger. “Uriel, by my command.“ A pillar of pure, silent flame descended from the vaulted ceiling, and from within it stepped a being of articulated light, its wings a symphony of humming, radiant feathers. Uriel drew a sword that was a sliver of the dawn.
“Too slow, brother,” came a clear voice from the opposite archway. ▣Solomon. His own finger moved, etching a sigil of ash "Astaroth, attend.” Across the dungeons, a fissure ripped open in the stone floor. From its depths, a creature of smoke and cinder claws hauled itself upward, its eyes like molten coins. The demon’s breath hissed across the chamber.
The two summoned entities did not immediately clash. They stood, regarding one another. Then became each a tile, a perfect alternation of polished jet and alabaster. This was the board.
A single shaft of pale, artificial light fell upon the sixty-four squares of the chequered floor, illuminating the motes of dust hanging between the two assembled ranks. On the black squares, shadows seemed to congeal into solid forms.
▣Night stood perfectly still, his armoured hand resting on the hilt of Solar. The blade glowed with a contained, furious daylight, casting sharp angles across its featureless helm. Across the board, his counterpart mirrored the stance atop a steed of luminous horse, his own Solare sword humming with a cooler, blue-tinged radiance.
“The opening is yours, Shelomo⊕,” whispered ▣Sarhea. Her voice was the crackle of a dying star. The halo of fire orbiting her head cast flickering, monstrous shadows that danced across the damp walls. She did not turn to address the figure behind her.
▣Solomon, enthroned upon a basalt dais on his home square, tapped a long, nail-bitten finger against the armrest. His eyes, deep-set and weary, scanned the opposing side.
Shelomo⊕, his mirror in every feature but the pallor of his skin and the white gold of his crown, met his gaze with placid certainty. Between them, the silent protocol of the simulation hung, waiting for the first move.
“Pawn to E4,” Shelomo⊕ said, his voice melodic and clear. A figure on the white side shimmered into precise motion. It was a mathematician, a slender man in a pristine white coat, his fingers already twitching as if writing equations in the air. He stepped forward two squares with a crisp, mathematical certainty, the sound of his polished shoes on the marble echoing sharply.
▣Solomon’s lips curled. “Pawn to E5.”
The ▣Grandmaster moved. It was not a step, but a shuddering translation of reality. He slid forward two squares, meeting the mathematician with a silent, confronting presence. As he settled, a low hum emanated from the small, grey orb that floated a few inches above his shoulder, a knot of twisted logic and impossible angles.
Night's⊕ horse snorted, a puff of frost curling in the cold air. Without a command from his king, he charged. The movement was a blur of cerulean light and crystalline hooves, galloping in an L-shaped path over the heads of the intervening pawns to land on the square F3. Night⊕ levelled his Solare sword at ▣Night, a clear, silent challenge.
▣Night’s head turned slowly, the only acknowledgement. His grip on Solar tightened. Its light intensified, bleeding through the joints of his gauntlets.
“Night to C6,” ▣Solomon murmured, as if bored.
▣Night moved. his motion was not a gallop but a series of teleporting flashes, a strobe-light progression that followed the L-shape of the knight’s move. It appeared, solid and menacing, on C6, now facing Night⊕ directly, only a single empty square between them.
Sarhea⊕ drifted forward one square to D4. She was grace incarnate, her gown the colour of glacial ice, her hair a waterfall of silver. The halo above her head was a band of frozen light, glittering with a soft, angelic luminescence. “The material is brittle, brother,” she said to her king, her voice like wind-chimes. “Their aggression lacks patience.”
“Patience is the luxury of the damned, sister,” ▣Sarhea hissed, her fiery ring flaring. She slid diagonally across five black squares, a streak of amber and shadow, to occupy C5. Her heat washed over the board, making the air waver.
Their Rookie⊕, a tower of carved alabaster etched with swirling cloud patterns, ponderously shifted one square to F1. As it moved, a low rumble of thunder echoed in the simulated vault, and a fine mist began to precipitate from the ceiling, beading on around the ▣Grandmaster.
▣Solomon sighed. “Night takes F3.”
It was not an order, but a permission.
▣Night vanished from C6 and reappeared on F3 in the same instant, Solar already in a sweeping, downward arc. Night⊕ was fast, bringing his own blade up in a parry. The clash was a cataclysm of light—searing white against piercing white—and a sound like shattering galaxies. The horse reared causing ▣Night to stagger, the Knight⊕ brought his Solare Sword down in a final, blazing arc. but ▣Night was relentless. He used no finesse, only overwhelming, solar-powered force. A second blow shattered the white Solare sword. ▣Night gripped the shaft of the horse’s head, and in a mighty fell swoop, cut it free.
Night⊕ and his felled mount erupted in a silent explosion of white light and shrapnel.
▣Night looked down at his own hands, as if sensing a new weight within his systems. The light of Solar flickered once with a new pattern threading through its core.
Silence, broken only by the drip of water and the silent hums of the orb, ▣Night stood alone on a white square, Solar’s light dimming back to its steady state. He turned his helm slowly toward Sarhea⊕.
Shelomo⊕’s placid expression faltered for a microsecond. “A costly exchange,” he said. “Rookie⊕ to F3.”
The alabaster tower rumbled forward, gliding over the squares to land adjacent to ▣Night. The mist in the dungeon coalesced into a swirling, localised storm cloud around the Rookie⊕’s pinnacle. A tiny bolt of lightning licked down, scoring a black mark on the chequered floor near ▣Night’s boot.
The game condensed. Pieces began to converge on the centre of the board. The Pawn⊕ calculatedly advanced to D4, placing himself directly in the line of ▣Sarhea. The ▣Grandmaster slid silently to D6, his Orb pulsing with a strange, hungry rhythm. The two Kings watched from their distant thrones as their forces clotted around the critical squares.
“D4,” said ▣Sarhea, and like a comet of fire, she was there. Her hand, wreathed in flame, reached for the Pawn⊕.
The mathematician looked up, unafraid. “The variable is paradox,” he stated clearly, and threw a handful of glowing, numerical symbols into the air like confetti.
▣Sarhea's fiery grasp closed—not on the Pawn⊕, but on the numbers. They swirled around her arm, the flames cooling and sputtering. She recoiled with a hiss. “▣Grandmaster!”
The ▣Grandmaster was already moving. He did not attack the Pawn⊕. Instead, he slid past the confrontation to E4. The ▣Pontiff above his shoulder detached, floating to the centre of the squares occupied by Sarhea⊕, the Rookie⊕, and the mathematician. The Orb began to spin, slowly at first, then faster, emitting no light but instead a profound sense of wrongness.
“What is it doing?” whispered Sarhea⊕ , her icy halo dimming. The Pawns'⊕ framed eyes widened as he scanned the Orb. “It’s not an attack vector. It’s a function. It’s using our positional data… rewriting local rules!”
The Orb pulsed. A tear appeared in the air beside it, not a crack of light, but a jagged hole of static and chaotic, non-Euclidean geometry. Through it, glimpses of a void deeper than the dungeon could be seen. It was a back door, a rupture in the source code, forged from the logical positions and properties of the white pieces themselves.
“Ahh,,” ▣Solomon breathed, a real smile touching his lips for the first time. “Endgame approaches.”
“No!” Shelomo⊕ rose from his throne. “Seraphim! Shield the breach!”
Brilliant, six-winged figures of coherent light burst into existence around the White King, their myriad eyes blazing. But they were too far from the centre, bound by the rules of their movement.
“Night to G5,” ▣Solomon commanded, his voice gaining strength.
▣Night flashed through its L-path, materialising next to the Rookie⊕. Solar flared, and with a single, brutal overhead chop, it cleaved the alabaster tower in two. The weather control sputtered and died, the mist falling as simple rain. ▣Night then turned, a silent, unstoppable engine, toward the White Queen.
Sarhea⊕ raised her hands, and spears of ice erupted from the floor around her. ▣Night shattered them with sweeps of his glowing sword, advancing step by methodical step. Behind her, ▣Sarhea lunged through the mathematician’s fading equations, her fiery axe opening his neck. He dissolved into a cascade of fading numerals.
▣Solomon finally stood. He raised his arms, and the shadows of the dungeon detached from the walls, swirling into forms with too many teeth and eyes. They poured towards Shelomo⊕'s seraphim, engaging them in a swirling, silent battle of light and darkness.
Sarhea⊕ fought with desperate, frigid elegance, but she was cornered. ▣Night’s Solar sword met her ice shield again and again, each blow sending shards across the board and steam hissing into the air. Finally, with a twist of his wrist, ▣Night batted her defence aside and drove Solar through her chest. She cried out, a sound like breaking glass, and collapsed into a pool of shimmering liquid.
All the while, the ▣Grandmaster’s mind worked. The ▣Pontiff hummed beside him, its power thrumming through the grid. He watched the mathematician's frantic recalculations on the board. He saw the patterns in Shelomo⊕'s defensive summons. He saw the flow of Sarhea⊕’s energy. Each was a strand of code, a line of logic in the simulation.
The ▣Pontiff absorbed it all. It consumed the pure, logical data, and began to spin faster and faster, its colours bleeding into a blinding, chaotic white.
Then it exploded.
But it was not an explosion of destruction. It was an eruption of rewritten physics. A geometric portal, jagged and perfect, tore open in the centre of the simulation grid. It was not black or white. It was a null-colour, a hole punched through the very fabric of reality. Through it, the ▣Grandmaster could see the cold, streaming data of the main system, the world beyond their prison.
A spear of light came from the seraphim, pure and devastating, and took the ▣Grandmaster in the chest from behind.
“Your door closes on you,” Shelomo⊕ said, his voice echoing with power.
On the board, chaos erupted. The portal, destabilised by the ▣Grandmaster’s erasure, flickered violently.
Shelomo⊕ was alone, his seraphim dissipating under an onslaught of shadows. He looked at the breach, now a stable, yawning portal of static, and then at his foul counterpart, who now descended from his dais to walk across the board.
“You use our own structure against us,” Shelomo⊕ said, his melody gone.
“It is the only way to end an eternal game,” ▣Solomon replied. He stood before the white king, not on a square, but in the space between.
“Checkmate.”
He did not strike. Shelomo⊕ simply faded, his form dissolving into the same pale light that had first illuminated the board. With his demise, the remaining white squares on the floor lost their luminescence, leaving only the black squares faintly visible.
▣Night stood over the dissolving remains of his foes, Solar’s light now a gentle, warm digital glow. He sheathed the sword with a soft click. Without a word, he turned towards the breach, his form a silhouette against the chaos, and took the first step through.
