The mansion was silent.
Victor stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the city that bent to his influence.
Behind him, the security chief entered.
“Captain left the restaurant.”
Victor didn’t turn around.
“And Jane?”
“She’s on her way home.”
Another pause.
“The sniper is asking for confirmation.”
Victor slowly smiled.
“Tell him to stand down.”
The chief blinked.
“But sir…we have a clean shot.”
Victor finally faced him.
“A bullet tells me nothing.”
The room fell silent.
Victor walked toward the giant chessboard displayed on a marble table. He picked up a black king and rolled it between his fingers.
“Captain isn’t my target.”
“He is my experiment.”
“Sir?”
Victor placed the king back on the board.
“I already know who Hawk is.”
“A decorated captain.”
“A grieving brother.”
“A man blinded by revenge.”
He chuckled.
“Revenge makes people predictable.”
The chief frowned.
“Then why let him live?”
Victor’s eyes darkened.
“Because I’m not interested in him.”
“I’m interested in my wife.”
Across the city…
Jane sat alone in her bedroom.
The conversation with Hawk replayed endlessly in her mind.
“I lost someone because of Victor.”
Those words felt genuine.
Every smile…
Every compliment…
Every shared laugh…
Had suddenly become meaningless.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
“So…”
“I was never the destination.”
“I was the path.”
Tears threatened to form, but she quickly wiped them away.
She had expected lies.
She hadn’t expected disappointment.
For a brief moment…
She had allowed herself to believe someone saw her, not simply Victor’s wife.
Now she wasn’t sure.
Meanwhile…
Hawk sat inside his apartment.
Photographs of Victor covered one wall.
Maps.
Routes.
Financial records.
Weapons.
Everything pointed toward one objective.
Justice.
Yet…
His thoughts kept drifting back to Jane.
He hated that.
She was supposed to be an asset.
Nothing more.
So why had it bothered him when she asked,
“Why me?”
He closed his eyes.
Because she looked…
…hurt.
“Damn it.”
He slammed a folder shut.
“Stay focused.”
“This is about Alex.”
Nothing else.
Or so he kept telling himself.
Back at the mansion…
Jane entered through the massive front doors.
Victor was waiting.
Not angry.
Not shouting.
Smiling.
Which frightened her even more.
“Did you enjoy your evening?”
Jane froze.
“You knew.”
Victor laughed softly.
“Knew?”
“My dear…”
“I arranged the table.”
Her heart skipped.
“The pianist?”
“Mine.”
“The waiter who poured your wine?”
“Mine.”
“The couple beside the window?”
“They’ve worked for me for six years.”
Jane felt the blood drain from her face.
“So…”
“There was never a moment…”
“…that wasn’t mine.”
Victor stepped closer.
He gently brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
To anyone watching…
It would have looked affectionate.
Jane knew better.
“I was never worried about him.”
His voice was calm.
“I was watching you.”
Jane swallowed hard.
“What…are you trying to prove?”
Victor smiled.
“I want the truth.”
“What truth?”
He tilted his head.
“Whether your heart still belongs to me…”
“…or whether someone else has begun living there.”
Jane stepped back instinctively.
Victor noticed.
He always noticed.
His smile disappeared.
“You stepped away.”
“I…”
“You’ve never stepped away before.”
Silence.
Victor reached into his pocket and removed a small silver key.
He placed it in Jane’s trembling hand.
“I have a gift.”
Jane looked at it.
“What is it?”
“The key to the west greenhouse.”
She frowned.
“The greenhouse?”
Victor nodded.
“That’s where our scientists grow the medicinal plants.”
He smiled again.
“I want you to show Captain”
Jane stared at him in disbelief.
“You…want me to?”
“Oh, yes.”
“If he truly wants revenge…”
“He’ll take the bait.”
“And if you truly love me…”
“You’ll bring him exactly where I want him.”
Victor leaned in until his forehead nearly touched hers.
“If neither of you betrays the other…”
“I lose nothing.”
“If Hawk betrays you…”
“I eliminate him.”
“If you betray me…”
“I’ll finally know.”
He whispered the last words with terrifying tenderness.
“I don’t punish uncertainty, Jane.”
“I punish certainty.”
Jane closed her fingers around the key.
For the first time in years…
She understood the prison she lived in.
Victor’s obsession had never been love.
It was possession.
He didn’t want her happiness.
He wanted proof that every thought, every choice, every heartbeat still belonged to him.
And somewhere else in the city…
Captain James “Hawk” Wilson unknowingly waited for a message that could either lead him to Victor…
…or into the deadliest trap of his life.
