There is a moment in life when the world seems to turn quietly on its head. The hands that once buttoned our shirts, tied our shoelaces and held us close when we were afraid begin to tremble. The voices that guided our childhood may grow faint, and the eyes that watched over us for decades may begin to search our faces for recognition.
It is a moment many of us never imagine when we are young.
We grow up believing our parents will always be there. They are the people we turn to when life becomes difficult, the voices we seek when we need advice and the familiar presence that makes even an uncertain world feel safe. We may disagree with them, complain about their rules or wish they would give us more freedom. Yet, somewhere deep within us, we assume that the people who raised us will always be strong enough to stand on their own.
Then time begins to tell a different story.
A mother who once managed an entire household may struggle to remember where she placed her belongings. A father who could recall events from decades ago may forget a conversation that took place only minutes earlier. Tasks that once came naturally may require assistance, and familiar surroundings may no longer offer the comfort they once did.
At first, we may dismiss these changes as ordinary signs of ageing. We laugh about forgotten names and misplaced items, reassuring ourselves that nothing serious is happening. But when the incidents become frequent, when confusion deepens and when a parent begins to struggle with familiar people and routines, we realise that something more profound may be unfolding.
For some families, the cause is dementia, a condition that can gradually affect memory, thinking, communication and the ability to manage everyday activities.
The discovery can be devastating. We may find ourselves grieving for changes in someone who is still alive, sitting beside us, breathing and reaching out for our attention. We remember the person they were, even as we struggle to understand the person they are becoming.
And then comes the moment that changes everything.
