Still to this day, he said softly, “I wish I’d known.” She shook her head gently. “You never asked.” Another pause. And then, a spark. “You know, I never really got even with you.” He blinked, startled. “ What?” Her smile widened. “That brand-new black Gallant you bought?” Nick groaned, already laughing. “Oh no.” She leaned in slightly. “You spent weeks hiding that car all over the mall parking lot because you were so sure I’d find it.” He shook his head, chuckling. “I was convinced.” “And one day,” she said, trying not to laugh, “you walked out and there it was, that long scratch down the side.” He threw his head back laughing. “And I thought, ‘Yeah, that tracks.’” She didn’t confirm it. She didn’t need to. Her smile said enough. Nick looked at her, his voice softening. “I may have broken your heart. But I never broke your spirit.” She held his gaze, calm and sure. “No,” she said. “You never did.”
