- Where hearts speak without words -
The air was quiet that morning.
The war had ended days ago, and yet the sky still felt heavy. As if the clouds were waiting for someone to say something they had never dared to say.
The palace was slowly returning to life. Flowers were blooming again. The broken stone walls were being repaired. People smiled again. Music floated through the courtyards.
But deep inside the garden, near the old wooden gate where it all began, stood Princess Lianhua.
She had heard the news.
Prince Wei Shen was leaving.
Her hands were cold. Her heart was warmer than ever. But her lips - silent.
He had asked for no farewell.
But she came anyway.
And there he was.
Standing with his back to her, dressed in travel robes, his sword tied behind him. The same sword she had seen cut through fire, protect children, and save her.
"You weren't going to say goodbye?" she asked quietly.
He turned slowly.
"I didn't want to make it harder," he said, voice calm but eyes full of something she couldn't name.
She stepped closer, but not too close.
They looked at each other like two souls that had known each other in another life.
Like they wanted to speak... but were afraid the moment would break.
"You fought for us," she said.
"So did you," he replied.
"You saved us."
"You saved yourself."
The silence between them was thick like velvet. Soft, heavy, beautiful.
"So this is it?" she asked, forcing a small smile. "After everything, we just… go back to our lives?"
Wei Shen looked at her, long and steady.
"We never go back to who we were. Not after a war. Not after..." He stopped.
But his silence said more than his words.
She looked down, her fingers gently touching the folds of her robe.
There were so many things she wanted to ask him.
Do you think of me when I'm not around?
Did your heart ache too?
Was that night beside the lake… as special to you as it was to me?
But she asked none of them.
Instead, she said, "Thank you… for walking beside me."
He smiled gently.
"I didn't walk beside you," he said. "I only followed your light."
Her heart stopped.
For a second, she thought he might say more. That he might take a step closer. That he might -
But he didn't.
He only turned slowly, facing the trees again.
The path ahead of him was long. The wind lifted his robe slightly, like it didn't want him to leave either.
And just before he took the first step, he said in the softest voice:
"If I ever forget my name… and you say it… I will remember everything - only because it's you."
She stood there, unable to move, her eyes stinging with unshed tears.
And then, as he walked away, fading into the forest mist, something happened.
He smiled.
Just a little.
Not for her to see.
But for himself.
And in a whisper only the trees heard, he said:
"I told her I loved her…
but she didn't understand."
The End.
(And somewhere, in their separate worlds, both of them carried the same ache - a love too deep for words, too silent to break.)
