Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride
*Chapter 27 - The Price of Silence*
Since the day Charles showed up at my door with a stolen loaf of bread in his hand and shame on his face, he had been living with me in my one-room apartment in the slums of Lagos.
Part of me felt pity for him - seeing him like that, broken and humbled. But another part of me... that part wanted him to taste the bitterness I once swallowed while serving in his father's house. I couldn't forget how he had treated me - how he made me feel invisible, worthless.
So, I made life difficult for him. Sometimes I denied him food. Sometimes, I made him fan me throughout the night while I slept. There were nights I poured water close to where he lay just to keep him restless. Other times, I used the one thing that scared him most - fear of exposure. I reminded him, again and again, that if he ever misbehaved, I would call those people he stole from and hand him over. He did everything I said like a trained dog. And I found it hard to believe that this was the same Charles - proud, arrogant, untouchable Charles - now sweeping my room and running errands.
Meanwhile, life moved on. I still opened my shop each morning, selling my little goods, trying to survive.
in the comfort of the mansion, Sir Frederick and Marita sat in their living room one evening.
"I just don't know where Charles is," Marita said, wringing her fingers.
"It's been months," she continued. "Not even a glimpse of him on the streets. If he's suffering, shouldn't I at least feel it as his mother?"
Sir Frederick grunted. "Don't let me hear that boy's name," he snapped. "He made his choices. We have a new maid now, and peace has returned to this house."
Back in my apartment, one evening, Charles turned to me.
"Chioma," he said softly, "can I ask you something?"
I looked at him briefly and nodded.
"This… this pregnancy. Who's responsible for it?"
I froze.
I had tried not to think about it, but his question pulled it back into the center of my chest.
"That's one of the reasons I left the house," I replied slowly. "How was I supposed to face anyone? I don't even know how it happened."
He went quiet.
I looked at him. "Why are you silent?"
After a pause, he said it - softly, like a confession stained with guilt.
"I'm… I'm sorry, Chioma."
"Sorry? For what?"
He lowered his eyes.
"That night… you slept in my room. You said you were going to the kitchen. While you were gone, I put something in your drink from my drawer. When you came back… I gave it to you. You drank it. After that... everything that happened… it was because of me."
My whole body went cold.
Tears welled up in my eyes. "You did that to me? You - ?!" I stopped myself, shaking my head in disbelief. "I came to help you… and you destroyed me."
He was pleading. Apologizing. But I wasn't listening anymore. I stormed outside, trying to catch my breath. The tears came, and they wouldn't stop.
Later that night, I couldn't stop thinking about everything - about Sir Frederick and Marita, about Richard. I hadn't called Richard in months. Out of curiosity, I visited his social media page… and that was when I saw it. Pictures of his wedding. He had married Chisholm.
I didn't say a word to Charles. I just kept quiet. But I made up my mind - I needed to visit the mansion. I needed closure.
one morning, I asked Charles to stay and manage the shop. He nodded without question, like a houseboy.
I arrived at the mansion, I knocked softly. The gate opened, and it was Osaho. His eyes widened at the sight of me - pregnant and standing there like a ghost from the past.
"Chioma! Where have you been?" he asked.
"I've been around," I smiled faintly. "Is Madam or Oga around?"
"Yes, yes! Come in."
As I stepped in, the new maid eyed me suspiciously. "Who are you?" she asked.
Before I could answer, Marita walked into the sitting room. Her eyes landed on me - and on my belly.
She gasped. "Chioma?! What happened to you?! Are you alright?"
Sir Frederick's voice followed as he stepped in. His face darkened. "Where have you been, Chioma?"
I explained everything - how I was treated in the house, how there was no food, no help, how Charles made life hell for me. How they never contacted me while they were away. And eventually… how I found out I was pregnant and left.
They asked me who was responsible. I hesitated.
Then I said it. "It was Charles."
Marita looked stunned. "How? What - ?"
I explained how he confessed to what he did. I told them Charles was now staying with me.
"He's alive?" she exclaimed, tears in her eyes. "Where is he? I want to see him. I miss my son."
Sir Frederick said nothing for a long while. Then finally, he looked at me and said, "You must come back to this house. You're pregnant with our grandchild. We'll take care of you."
Marita held my hand tightly. "I missed you, Chioma. Thank you for coming back."
