Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride
*Chapter 23: Echoes of the Missing*
The afternoon sun filtered through the lace curtains of the cozy sitting room in London, casting delicate patterns on the polished wooden floor. Sir Frederick sat in his favorite armchair, a steaming cup of Earl Grey in hand, while his wife, Ma rita, paced the room, her brow furrowed with concern.
"Frederick, it's been days since we've heard from Charles," she said, her voice tinged with worry. "Charles insists he doesn't know where she is. This is unacceptable."
Sir Frederick sighed, setting his cup down. "I agree, darling. We entrusted her care to Charles, and now she's vanished. He must find her before we return to Nigeria."
Just then, the phone rang, interrupting their thoughts. Ma Rita answered, her face lighting up as she recognized the caller.
"Ekene! What a pleasant surprise," she greeted.
"Good afternoon, Mum," came Ekene's cheerful voice. "I have wonderful news. Nancy has given birth to twins - a boy and a girl."
Ma Rita gasped in delight. "Oh, that's marvelous! Congratulations to you both."
Sir Frederick leaned in, eager to hear the news. "Please send our love to Nancy and the little ones," he added.
"Thank you," Ekene replied. "We wish you could be here in Dubai to celebrate with us."
Ma rita's smile faded slightly. "We would have loved to, but there's a pressing matter. Chioma has gone missing, and Charles claims ignorance."
Ekene's tone turned serious. "That's concerning. I hope she's safe. Please keep me updated."
After the call ended, Sir Frederick turned to his wife. "We must return to Nigeria immediately. Charles needs to understand the gravity of this situation."
Back in Nigeria, Charles sat in his study, the weight of his parents' impending arrival pressing down on him. His phone buzzed, displaying their number.
"Charles," Sir Frederick's voice boomed. "Have you found Chioma?"
"No, Father," Charles replied, his voice subdued.
Ma rita interjected, her tone sharp. "You must find her before we arrive. This is unacceptable."
After the call, Charles clenched his fists, frustration mounting. He muttered to himself, "Richard must be behind this."
Determined, Charles contacted the local police, accusing Richard of kidnapping me. Within hours, officers arrived at Richard's residence, arresting him despite his protests.
"I haven't seen Chioma," Richard insisted as he was led away.
Meanwhile, I sat in my friend's modest kitchen, chopping vegetables for soup. She glanced at me, a mischievous smile playing on her lips.
"So, who's the father?" she teased.
I sighed, setting down the knife. "I honestly don't know. Things happened... it's all a blur."
She reached over, squeezing my hand. "Whatever happens, I'm here for you."
Days later, Sir Frederick and Ma Rita arrived in Nigeria, confronting Charles. He handed them a letter I'd left behind.
"Richard kidnapped her," Charles explained.
As they read the letter, a message pinged on Charles's phone. It was from me.
"Please don't look for me. I'm safe. I left because I had to, not just because of what's in the letter. It was for my own well-being."
ma Rita looked up, tears in her eyes. "Charles, what did you do to drive her away?"
He shook his head, remorse evident. "I was angry she went to Richard's house. That's all."
Sir Frederick's gaze was stern. "You must make this right, Charles. Before it's too late."
