Title: Bound by Blood, Broken by Pride
*Chapter 18 - Tensions and Secrets*
The house was unusually quiet that morning. I stood by the staircase, watching as Charles walked out of his room. His eyes locked on me - not with anger, but with something unreadable. I froze under his gaze. He didn't say a word. Just turned, walked past me, pushed the door open, and stepped into the sunlight. A few seconds later, the sound of his car engine cut through the stillness and he drove off.
Not long after, Ekene and Nancy emerged from their room with their bags. A black SUV pulled into the compound, ready to take them to the airport.
"Take care of the house, okay?" Nancy said, pulling me into a warm hug.
"I will. I'll miss you so much," I whispered.
Ekene smiled, bringing out some cash from his pocket. "Use this if you need anything. We'll keep in touch."
"They waved, and soon the car was gone. The gate closed, and once again, silence returned.
Meanwhile, Charles had gone to Richard's house. But when he pushed the door open without knocking, what he saw made his heart clench. There, on Richard's lap, was Chisom Loretta - the woman Charles had been secretly in love with. their laugh stopped as they saw Charles frozen in the doorway.
"You?" Charles said, his voice trembling.
Richard stood quickly. "What are you doing here barging into my house?"
"You knew how I felt about her, Richard. You knew!"
You have no right to act like this, Charles! she's not yours."
The shouting intensified. Charles turned, fists clenched, and stormed out. On his way out, he passed Richard's gate man, who looked confused but shrugged and muttered, "Na rich people wahala be this."

Charles drove aimlessly for hours. Confused. Betrayed. Angry. He stopped at a bar and ordered drink after drink, drowning every thought in alcohol. The night became a blur.

Back home, I had gone to bed early. The loneliness in the house was overwhelming. Before sleeping, I took a mild pill to help with my persistent headache, locking my door behind me.
By morning, the air felt different. I opened my eyes slowly and realized I wasn't alone in the bed.
Charles.
He was lying beside me.
We were fully clothed - but his arm was draped around me, as if he had been holding me all night.
I slowly removed his arm, heart racing. How did he get into my room? Why?
I tiptoed into the bathroom, splashed water on my face, and tried to make sense of everything. My head was spinning - not from fear, but confusion.
Downstairs, I started breakfast. I heard footsteps behind me.
"Who brought me into your room?" Charles asked suddenly, his voice groggy.
I turned. "I don't know. I locked my door last night. I was asleep when you came back."
He stared at me long and hard. "So… nothing happened?"
"No. Nothing," I said, holding my breath.
He ran a hand down his face, clearly struggling with his thoughts. "I'm sorry," he finally muttered and walked away.
And I stood there, confused, hurt, and questioning if this house would ever feel like home.
