It happened on a Wednesday afternoon, the kind of day when the air felt heavy even though the sun was out.
Tasha told Darnell she was going to her aunt's to drop off some dessert she'd baked the night before.
It wasn't a lie. She did have dessert in the passenger seat.
She just didn't mention that she knew Marcus was going to be there, helping Carl fix the fence.
The Visit
When she pulled up, Marcus was in the yard, shirt clinging to his back from the heat. He waved, that easy smile making her forget for a moment that she'd even driven here with a plan.
They talked in the shade for a while, sipping sweet tea her aunt had brought out. It was innocent enough - until her aunt left to take a call, and the conversation dipped into that familiar quiet space only they seemed to share.
"You ever think about… just leaving it all behind?" Marcus asked softly.
She exhaled slowly. "More than I should."
The Feeling of Being Watched
When she finally headed home, she took the back road to avoid the afternoon traffic. That's when she noticed it - a dark SUV two cars behind her.
Her chest tightened. It wasn't until she turned onto her own street and the SUV slowed too, only to keep going once she pulled into her driveway, that her suspicion solidified.
It was Darnell's cousin's car.
The one he always lent out when "he needed a favor."
The Confrontation That Wasn't
That night, Darnell was quieter than usual. No accusations, no shouting, just a strange calm that made her more nervous than anger ever could.
"You go to your aunt's?" he asked while flipping through the TV channels.
"Yeah," she replied, keeping her voice even.
"Mm-hmm." He didn't look at her, but the way his jaw tightened told her he was filing away her answer like evidence.
The Growing Risk
Lying in bed that night, she stared at the ceiling, knowing two things for certain:
Darnell didn't have proof yet.
If he got it, there'd be no going back.
But the thought of giving up Marcus… the warmth of his presence, the way her soul felt lighter around him…
That felt impossible.
And for the first time, she realized this wasn't just a fling.
It was a choice she was making every single day - and one day soon, it was going to cost her.
