They didn't rush to leave the hotel.
Tasha lay there, her head resting on Marcus's chest, listening to the slow, steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It was so different from the tense, restless energy that Darnell carried - this was calm, grounded, and warm in a way she hadn't felt in years.
Marcus didn't fill the silence with small talk. He just held her, his fingers tracing her arm like he wanted to memorize the shape of her.
When she finally sat up, he watched her with that same steady look.
"You good?" he asked, voice low.
She nodded. "Yeah. I'm good."
But deep down, she knew good wasn't the word. She felt alive.
The Ride Back
The drive home was quiet, not awkward, but charged - like both of them knew nothing about this day would stay contained in this day.
When they pulled up to Carl's, Marcus turned toward her.
"You need me, you call me. Doesn't matter the time."
It wasn't said like a line. It was a promise.
She gave him a small nod before heading inside to get the kids.
Back to the House
Walking into her own home felt… strange. The air was still. Darnell's shoes were kicked off near the couch, his hat on the table. He was in the bedroom, halfway through a nap, like his day had been nothing but errands and convenience.
"You eat?" she asked from the doorway.
"Yeah. Made a sandwich earlier," he mumbled without opening his eyes.
She stood there a moment, looking at him - this man she had once sworn her life to, who had broken vows long before she ever even considered stepping outside of them.
And for the first time, she didn't feel guilty.

When she stopped by Carl's later that week, Marcus was there helping fix the porch railing. He looked up, caught her eye, and there was something unspoken between them - not just I remember, but I want more.
