The dive was a scream of freezing air and tearing cloud.
Cinder plummeted through the gray belly of the storm like a chunk of obsidian torn from an erupting volcano. The wind shrieked through the needle-iron pins in Lyra’s combat braids, tearing at her seal-fur leathers, but her gaze never wavered from the octagonal expanse of the Gilded Eye expanding beneath them.
The floating fortress was waking up.
Alarms—harsh, brassy horns that sounded like enraged brass bulls—blared across the quarter-mile platform. The two domed towers pivoted with grinding mechanical shrieks, their massive alchemical searchlights locking onto the descending silhouette of the dragon.
Blinding beams of neon-gold phosphor slashed through the rain, turning the dark swells around the fortress into boiling sheets of emerald steam.
"Ballistas tracking!" Talia’s voice whipped back from the flank harness, barely audible over the gale. "High elevation! Quad-mounts on the eastern bastions!"
From the eight corners of the fortress, thirty-two heavy sun-stone ballistas fired in staggered, concussive volleys.
Heavy harpoons forged from gold-plated cold iron shrieked into the sky, trailing whistling ribbons of alchemical fire. The air smelled instantaneously of ozone, scorched copper, and sulfurous venom.
"Roll him, warlord!" Lyra roared over her shoulder.
Gideon didn't flinch. His colossal forearms wrenched the iron-ringed guide reins to the left with brutal, fluid precision, his thighs locking around the high saddle-tree.
"Down, beast!" Gideon commanded, his low bass vibrating straight through Cinder’s scaly spine.
Cinder snapped his left wing tight against his flank, throwing his two-ton body into a violent, corkscrew spiral.
Three golden harpoons sheared through the empty air inches from his underbelly, the backdraft of their alchemical fire scorching the fringe of Gideon’s wolf-pelt mantle. A fourth bolt clipped the jagged horn of Cinder’s left crest, splintering the tip into black volcanic dust.
The pain only enraged the elder wyrm.
Cinder opened his jaws mid-dive.
A sphere of superheated, cobalt-blue volcanic fire churned within the beast's throat, illuminating the descending storm clouds with apocalyptic radiance. With an earth-shaking roar, the drake unleashed a torrent of subterranean flame straight into the eastern bastion.
The impact was catastrophic.
Gold-plated iron melted like butter beneath a blowtorch. The quad-ballistas detonated in a chain reaction of volatile alchemical reserves, blasting forty gold-armored imperial sentries into the churning sea in a cloud of blinding white shrapnel.
Before the smoke could clear, Cinder flared his sixty-foot wings thirty feet above the central courtyard, arresting his momentum with a concussive boom that shattered every stained-glass window in the observation towers.
"Clear the harness!" Gideon bellowed.
With twin rasps of singing star-iron, the warlord sheared the leather safety buckles binding them to the saddle.
He didn't wait for the drake to touch down.
Gideon seized Lyra around the waist with his left arm, leaped from the thirty-foot drop, and drew his right claymore mid-fall.
They hit the gold-plated deck with a bone-jarring crash. Gideon absorbed the brutal shock with his armored knees, rolling instantly to his feet, placing his colossal frame squarely between Lyra and twenty advancing imperial guards.
The guards wore interlocking scale armor of pure electrum, their golden masks weeping cold alchemical tears, their heavy solar halberds crackling with volatile red lightning.
"Kill the northern curs!" their captain shrieked through his mask. "Protect the siphon conduits!"
Gideon met them with a roar that drowned out the ocean gale.
The star-iron claymore became a blur of whistling, violet-lit death. Gideon cleaved through the first three guards in a single, devastating two-handed sweep, the blade shearing through gold plate, muscle, and bone as if carving rotten cedar. He stepped forward into the breach, his boots cracking the gilded deck-plates, his massive shoulders driving the imperial line backward in a spray of dark blood and severed limbs.
Behind them, Varis, Talia, and the six Void-dancers dropped from Cinder’s flank harnesses like liquid shadow.
The Ember guard moved with surgical, terrifying silence. Their twin curved executioner's blades danced between the clumsy thrusts of the heavy solar halberds, opening throats and severing tendons before the imperial guards could even cycle their lightning charges.
Meanwhile, Cinder rampaged across the western landing deck, his armored tail sweeping sixty feet of iron railing into the sea, his colossal talons tearing the mooring lines of Malakor’s sun-clipper into shredded ribbons.
Lyra didn't draw her skinning knife.
She didn't look at the slaughter around her.
She sprinted across the blood-slick deck, straight toward the center of the octagonal platform.
There, protruding from a massive circular hatch of reinforced sea-granite, was the Heart of the Atoll: a colossal, pulsing manifold of thick, translucent glass pipes filled with swirling, molten gold liquid.
And plunging straight down through the center of the hatch, disappearing into the two-mile abyss of the trench below, were the eight colossal cables of cold gold.
Lyra dropped to her knees beside the manifold.
The heat radiating from the glass was blistering, scorching the fur trim of her leathers, but it was the spiritual stench that made her gorge rise.
Through the glass, she didn't just see fuel.
She felt the agony of the chained Sun Wyrm two miles below. The cables were vibrating with a frantic, desperate cadence—the rhythmic weeping of an ancient, dying elder-beast whose marrow was being siphoned drop by agonizing drop to power the weapons of tyrants.
Help me, a voice echoed through the spiritual ether—not in words, but in a primordial roar of ancient, suffocating grief that rattled the roots of Lyra’s teeth. The cold gold burns. Break the tethers.
Lyra looked at the eight cables.
Each one was as thick as a redwood trunk, reinforced with ancient solar runes that repelled physical steel. An axe would shatter against them; Gideon’s claymores would take hours to notch through the enchanted metal.
They aren't physical chains, Lyra realized, her violet eye flaring with celestial, starlit fire. They're blood-leases. Mortgaged to the Emperor’s line.
"Lyra! Hurry!" Talia shouted from forty paces away, parrying a solar halberd with one rapier and driving her second blade through a gunner's throat. "The southern searchlight tower is rotating! They're priming the heavy mortar!"
Across the courtyard, the central dome was grinding open, revealing a colossal cannon barrel carved from solid ruby-glass, glowing with an apocalyptic, blinding sphere of red solar fire aimed straight at Cinder’s flank.
Gideon was locked in a brutal melee with six elite imperial halberdiers, his leathers stained with crimson, his teeth bared in a feral snarl as he fought his way toward her.
"Do it, little bird!" Gideon roared, cleaving an officer's shield in two.
Lyra didn't reach for her knife.
She threw off her seal-fur gloves.
She laid both bare hands directly onto the scorching surface of the eight golden cables.
The contact was blinding agony.
Solar fire surged up her forearms, charring her skin, melting her leather vambraces into slag. The ancient covenants of the Solar Dominion slammed into her consciousness like eight molten hammers, trying to incinerate her mind to ash.
Blood gushed from both of her nostrils, sizzling as it dripped onto the burning gold.
Lyra didn't pull back.
Her inner Void-wolf surged forward, throwing its smoke-and-amethyst body against the imperial fire.
You want our marrow, Emperor? Lyra snarled into the spiritual void, her voice echoing across two thousand leagues of ocean, straight into the throne room of the Gilded Archipelago. TAKE IT ALL!
She didn't just sever the eight cables.
She ignited them with the void.
Lyra channeled the absolute, frozen starlight of the Morvath lineage directly down the eight lines, inverting the imperial siphon in a single, catastrophic heartbeat.
Two miles below the surface, in the freezing black depths of the Leviathan Trench, the chained Sun Wyrm opened its golden eyes.
The cold gold chains binding its colossal, serpent-like body turned blinding violet.
With a sound like the world splitting in two, the ancient beast flexed its titanic coils.
And the eight cables were yanked downward with the force of a sinking continent.
Above, on the floating fortress, the deck groaned.
The octagonal platform buckled inward, the heavy granite piers snapping like dry toothpicks as the colossal weight of the awakened sea-god dragged the entire Gilded Eye straight down into the abyss.
"CINDER! TO ME!" Gideon bellowed, breaking free of the melee.
He lunged across the buckling deck, his massive arms scooping Lyra’s smoke-covered, exhausted body off the collapsing manifold just as the central hatch imploded into a vortex of boiling foam and shattered gold.
Gideon threw her upward with all his strength.
Cinder swept low over the collapsing deck, his massive talons snatching Gideon and Lyra out of the air a fraction of a second before the entire floating fortress was dragged beneath the waves.
The ocean closed over the Gilded Eye with an earth-shattering roar, leaving behind only a massive, swirling whirlpool of emerald foam and burning debris.
Circling three hundred feet above the whirlpool, Cinder hovered in the gale, his chest heaving.
Lyra lay tucked securely against Gideon’s blood-spattered chest in the war-saddle, her burned hands wrapped in the torn fringe of his cloak, her breathing shallow and ragged.
Gideon held her with desperate, trembling ferocity, his scarred face buried in her hair, inhaling her scent of nightshade, cedar, and starlight as if she were the only air left in the world.
"You did it," Gideon whispered, his deep bass raw with awe. "You broke the atoll."
Suddenly, the water at the center of the whirlpool began to glow.
Not with the sickly, synthetic green of the Coven.
With pure, radiant, incandescent molten gold.
The surface of the ocean erupted.
Rising from the black depths of the trench, breaching the waves like a living mountain of liquid sunlight, came the Sun Wyrm.
The creature was colossal—easily three hundred feet of shimmering golden scales, crested with majestic fins that glowed like burning auroras.
The ancient beast hovered above the swells for three breathtaking seconds, water cascading from its massive coils like a thousand waterfalls.
It turned its colossal, intelligent golden gaze upward, locking onto Lyra.
It let out a deep, harmonic song—a sound that resonated through the water, through the air, and straight into the core of Lyra’s soul. A song of gratitude. A song of ancient, fated kinship.
Then, with a gentle flick of its titanic tail, the Sun Wyrm turned south, swimming through the open deep toward the Gilded Archipelago, clearing a glowing golden path through the treacherous waters of the Sunken Straits.
Lyra looked at the glowing trail stretching across the ocean, a weak, victorious smile curving her bloodied lips.
"He's leading the way, Gideon," she murmured.
Gideon looked down at her, his amber eyes burning with fierce, savage pride, his hand coming up to cup her bruised jaw.
"Then let's follow the god to his master's throat," Gideon growled.
And Cinder banked hard into the south, following the golden tide toward the heart of the empire.
