I woke up in a hospital.
Daniel was sitting beside my bed.
His hand was wrapped around mine.
For a moment, I thought it had all been a nightmare.
Then I remembered.
My father was alive.
My mother had lied to me.
Daniel had disappeared to protect me.
And Ethan—
“Where is Ethan?”
Daniel looked away.
My heart dropped.
“What happened?”
“He went after your father.”
I tried to sit up.
“No.”
“He wouldn't let anyone hurt you.”
“Where is he?”
Daniel hesitated.
“We don't know.”
Three days passed.
The police arrested several men connected to my father's criminal network.
My mother survived.
She confessed everything.
My father was found at a private airport trying to leave the country.
The documents from the lake house were enough to expose the entire operation.
But Ethan was still missing.
On the fourth evening, I went to the lake house alone.
I stood beside the fireplace where Daniel had proposed to me.
So much had changed since that night.
I touched the stone wall.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
Ethan stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Bruised.
Smiling.
I ran to him.
He caught me in his arms.
“You're late,” I whispered.
“I'm sorry.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“I've been told I'm difficult to kill.”
I laughed through my tears.
Then I pulled away.
“What happened?”
“I found your father.”
“And?”
“He won't be hurting anyone again.”
I nodded.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small box.
My heart stopped.
“No.”
He smiled.
“Don't worry. I'm not asking you to marry me.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a simple silver ring.
“The ring Daniel gave you was stolen.”
He held this one toward me.
“I thought you deserved one that belonged to you.”
I looked at him.
“You're not the wrong groom anymore.”
His smile disappeared.
“What?”
I took the ring.
“When I first saw you at the altar, I thought you were the worst thing that had ever happened to me.”
“And now?”
“Now I'm beginning to think you were the best mistake I ever made.”
He laughed.
“That sounds romantic.”
“It wasn't meant to be.”
“It sounded romantic.”
I smiled.
Then I looked toward the lake.
“Daniel will always be the love of my past.”
Ethan's expression softened.
“And me?”
I looked into his eyes.
“You're the man I choose for my future.”
He took my hand.
This time, there were no lies.
No secrets.
No one pretending to be someone else.
Just us.
Six months later, I stood beneath the same white flowers I had chosen for my first wedding.
Only this time, I wasn't walking toward the wrong groom.
I was walking toward the right man.
Ethan waited at the altar.
He looked nervous.
I smiled.
“You're shaking.”
“So are you.”
“I'm not.”
“You are.”
I looked down.
He was right.
I was shaking.
But this time, it wasn't fear.
It was happiness.
When I reached him, Ethan took my hand.
And before the ceremony began, he whispered:
“Are you sure?”
I squeezed his fingers.
“Completely.”
Then I looked at the man I had once mistaken for a stranger.
The man who had entered my life wearing someone else's ring.
The man who had started as the wrong groom.
And somehow became exactly the man I was meant to find.
“I do,” I whispered.
And this time, there was no mystery left.
Only love.
