The room was the same in twelve years.
The yellow curtains still hung - now faded, their bright sunbeam color softened to a memory. Dust motes hovered in the air like time itself suspended, and in the corner, the wooden crib still stood, empty, except for a soft bear whose plush had long since lost its fur.
Mara stood in the doorway, keys still clenched in her hand. She had not meant to open this door today. She'd come back only for the last boxes, a grab and run before handing the keys over to the realtor. But her fingers had paused on the handle, instinctively, as if remembering before she did.
Twelve years.
The house had been furnished with other rooms. The kitchen with its cracked tile. The skinny stairway she'd painted with Elijah's small handprints. The bathroom mirror that had seen her grief through sleepless nights. But this room was the center. Or the wound.
She came in barefoot. The floorboards groaned under her feet. The curtains billowed in the wind, and she could almost hear him laugh, bright and bubbling, the sound of small, pure joy.
Elijah had lived 389 days.
Long enough to say "Mama," to recognize his blue blanket, to walk three unsteady steps toward her on a Tuesday she would never forget.
Not enough to grow teeth. Or say "Mommy." Or celebrate his second birthday.
The illness had entered like a whisper. Fever, rash, nothing initially serious. Then hospital, monitors, antiseptic white light, and the expressions of the nurses when they didn't realize she was watching.
She had lost him in autumn.
The trees had changed color while she was in the hospital room, and when she came home, everything was different except the house. The house was the same, as if pretending he had just gone down to take a nap.
For years, she couldn't touch his things. Couldn't enter here. Her then husband - now ex-husband-had - had pleaded with her to clear out the room, to donate the clothes, to start fresh. He needed to move on.
But she couldn't. Or wouldn't. And in the silence between them, the grief took hold, too large to share a life with.
They separated two years later.
Now here she was, older than she planned to be, in a house that was no longer hers, in front of a room that had held the beginning of everything.
And something inside of her said: It's time.
Mara got down on her knees beside the crib and reached for the bear. It was smaller than she remembered. Worn from being held, kissed, perhaps even chewed. She cradled it in her lap and let the memories fall.
There was the day Elijah had cried for hours, inconsolable, until she sang the silly jellybean song he adored. The way he clapped for himself when he learned how to wave. The little blue shoes she never got to see dirty.
She clutched the bear to her face and let herself cry - not the stifled, hidden kind of crying she had been doing for years, but the kind that started in the center of her chest. A holy kind of crying.
Grief, she had learned, wasn't a closed door. It was a room you returned to, again and again, with fresh eyes each time.
She stayed there until the light outside her window disappeared. Then she got up, steady now, and began to move.
She gathered the things piece by piece. The clothes, the toys, the books he had chewed. She didn't throw them away. She folded them neatly, placing them in a donation box she marked Elijah's Room. Another box she marked Keep. And another letter - letters she had written to him over the years, tucked into drawers and under pillows, none of them read.
Hours may have gone by, maybe more. But when she stood once more, the room was bare. The crib was broken down. The curtains were gone. The bear was still in her arms.
It was the same room yet. But it was lighter somehow.
She walked outside and looked back one last time. A part of her would always be there, but the rest of her - perhaps the best of her - was ready to move on.
Downstairs, her phone buzzed.
It was a message from Leah, the young woman from the community shelter who'd just had her second daughter and had nothing but a couch to sleep on. Mara had met her volunteering a few weeks back.
"Are you still good to meet? We're home now. Baby could use a few things if that offer's still good."
Mara looked over at the boxes in the hall.
Yes. The offer was still good.
She replied, "On my way."
And for the first time in twelve years, she closed the door without looking back.
