The Beginning of Trouble (2017) Back in 2017, Tony was a model student in high school, a quiet and focused kid in Form 3. His life had always been fairly stable and predictable - until that year, when everything started to unravel. It all began one Friday evening. Fridays at their school were uneventful, mostly spent sitting through a boring news session in the hall. But that night, things took an unexpected turn. A group of mischievous boys from Form 2 approached Tony. Their faces lit up with excitement as they hatched a plan. "What can we do to stir things up?" one of them asked, his voice low and conspiratorial. Though Tony wasn't initially part of their plan, he suggested, almost absentmindedly, "Why don't we start by smashing the TV in the hall?" To his surprise, they actually went along with the idea. That night, the sound of the TV crashing to the floor echoed through the school. What started as a simple act of defiance escalated when the boys planned to set the school on fire. The police arrived just in time to prevent further damage, but Tony found himself wrapped up in the investigation. Though he wasn't directly involved in setting the fire, his name ended up on the list of suspects. A Secret Relationship and Her Tears At the same time, Tony was also navigating a secret relationship with a girl named Chebet. Even though it was against the rules, they secretly spent time together - sharing moments when no one was looking. It wasn't just physical; there was a deep emotional connection that made their time together feel real. When the police came to investigate the incident, Chebet couldn't hide her worry. She watched as Tony was questioned, her heart sinking as she realized the gravity of the situation. She had never imagined her relationship would lead to this - punishment, suspicion, and fear. The Consequences and Tony's Escape The consequences were swift. Tony was suspended for three weeks and told to return with his parents. His parents were furious when they found out. His mother's anger, his father's disappointment - it was almost too much to bear. But inside, Tony felt numb, his anger directed at the world that seemed to be falling apart around him. Three weeks later, his father was ready to take him back to school. But Tony couldn't face the reality of his situation. There was more than just the suspension - he had made other mistakes that would soon catch up with him. Back in January, his father had given him $150 to pay the school fees. But instead of using the money as intended, Tony spent it on things that now seemed trivial. The school fees went unpaid, and by June, when the time came to return to school, Tony knew the truth would be exposed. With his father still believing the fees were paid, Tony panicked. He couldn't go back. So, in a moment of fear and desperation, he ran away from home. The Escape to Nakuru After running away from home, Tony found himself in Nakuru, a city that felt both overwhelming and liberating. The bustling streets, the constant noise, and the sense of anonymity offered him a strange comfort. For the first time in a long while, he didn't feel the weight of expectations on his shoulders. But he couldn't escape the reality of what he had done - he was still on the run, and the consequences of his actions were lurking just around the corner. As luck would have it, Tony ran into an old friend from high school, Kim. Kim was now a first-year student at the University of Nakuru, living in a small shared apartment near campus. When Tony explained what had happened - how he'd run away from home to avoid facing the consequences of his suspension and the unpaid school fees - Kim listened without judgment. "I understand," Kim said, after a long pause. "You've been under a lot of pressure. But you can stay here for a while. We'll figure something out." Tony felt a sense of relief. Kim had always been the kind of friend who would listen without getting angry, and that's exactly what Tony needed in that moment. Kim wasn't angry at him for running away. Instead, he offered a solution. They'd lay low for a while, and Kim would help Tony figure out what to do next. At this point, though, Tony knew his parents were worried sick. They had no idea where he was. His mother had probably cried herself to sleep every night, and his father was probably out searching for him. Tony felt a pang of guilt, but it didn't stop him from moving forward. He knew he couldn't go back - not yet. Life in Nakuru Kim's apartment was simple but comfortable. It was far from luxurious, but it was enough for the two of them. They spent their days talking, catching up, and figuring out their next moves. Tony knew he couldn't stay with Kim forever, but it was a place to lay low while he figured things out. "I don't know what to do next," Tony admitted one evening as they sat together, watching the city lights flicker from the window. "I've messed everything up. My parents are probably looking for me, and I don't even know how I'll face them when I do go back." Kim nodded, understanding the weight of the situation. "You don't have to figure it all out today. Just take it one step at a time. We'll figure out your school situation, and I'll help you find a way to make things right." Meanwhile, back at home, the situation was escalating. Tony's parents had reported him missing to the authorities, but there had been no sign of him. His mother was devastated, unsure of where her son had gone, while his father struggled to maintain control of the situation. They never thought Tony would run away like this. It wasn't like him. As the days passed, Tony felt a growing sense of guilt about the pain he was causing his parents. He had hoped for freedom, but the weight of his actions was catching up with him. Nakuru was far from home, but he knew that sooner or later, the truth would have to come out. A Letter from Home A week later, Tony received a letter. It was from his mother. The letter was simple, but the words inside made Tony's heart ache with deep, painful remorse. Tony, we don't know where you are, but your father and I have been worried sick. I cry myself to sleep every night, wondering where you are and what's happened to you. We love you, and we just want to know you're safe. Please, come home. Whatever happened, we'll work through it together. Don't leave us in the dark anymore. We're waiting for you. Reading it, Tony's tears fell freely. His mother's words echoed in his mind, the love and fear in every sentence making him feel even more lost. He had wanted freedom, but now he realized that running away had only created more pain for the people who loved him. Kim had seen Tony's distress and sat beside him in silence. After a while, he spoke softly. "You know what you have to do, right?" Tony nodded, wiping his eyes. "I have to go back. It's time to face them. I can't keep running." The Journey Home to Kisumu The decision was made, and Tony packed his few belongings, preparing to leave Nakuru behind. It wasn't going to be easy, but he knew it was the right thing to do. He had to go back to his parents, apologize, and try to make things right. Kim offered him a ride to the bus station, and as they sat in the car, Tony felt a mix of fear and relief. It wasn't going to be an easy confrontation, but he couldn't live with the guilt any longer. "Good luck, man," Kim said as Tony stepped out of the car. "I'm sure everything will work out. Just take it one step at a time." Tony nodded, grateful for Kim's friendship. "Thanks, Kim. I'll never forget this." He walked toward the bus, his heart heavy but resolute. He was heading home - back to Kisumu, back to his parents, back to the consequences he had tried to avoid. But deep down, he knew this was the only way to begin healing the wounds he had caused. Home Again Tony walked the familiar streets of Kisumu, his footsteps slow but purposeful. When he reached their house, he hesitated for a moment at the gate. The sight of his childhood home stirred up a mix of emotions. Taking a deep breath, Tony pushed open the gate and walked toward the door. He knocked softly, unsure what to expect. The door creaked open, and there stood his mother. Her face was a mixture of surprise, relief, and exhaustion. The moment she saw Tony, her eyes welled up with tears. "Tony!" she exclaimed, her voice breaking. "Where have you been? We've been so worried!" Without saying a word, Tony stepped forward, and his mother pulled him into a tight embrace. The tension in his chest finally began to release as he held her, feeling the weight of everything he had done and the overwhelming relief of being home. "I'm so sorry, Mom," Tony whispered. "I should never have run away. I've made so many mistakes." His mother didn't say anything at first, just held him tighter. After a moment, she pulled away slightly, looking at him with a mixture of love and concern. "We'll talk about everything later," she said softly. "But right now, I'm just happy you're home.
