As Michael's wealth increased, his calls home became less frequent.
At first, he explained that business was keeping him busy. Later, he stopped explaining altogether.
Grace understood that her son had responsibilities. She never demanded money or expensive gifts. She only wished to hear his voice.
One afternoon, she called him.
"Michael, my son, when will you visit? I haven't seen you in almost a year."
"Mum, I'm handling an important deal. I'll come soon."
"You always say that."
"I promise, Mum."
But the promise remained unfulfilled.
Meanwhile, Patrick encouraged Michael to attend expensive dinners, networking events, and business gatherings.
"You're a millionaire now," Patrick told him. "You must spend time with people at your level. You cannot keep living like the village boy you used to be."
Michael laughed, agreeing with him.
Gradually, he became embarrassed by his humble beginnings. He stopped talking about his mother's vegetable business and avoided mentioning the village where he grew up.
When colleagues asked about his family, he gave vague answers.
He had not forgotten his mother completely. He had simply convinced himself that he could always make time for her later.
Unfortunately, life does not always wait for us to become available.
