Promises in the Shade
Amaya was only sixteen when Elijah made her a promise that would shape her entire youth. They sat beneath the wide almond tree in the center of their small village, where roots curled deep into the earth and memories seemed to hang from the branches. He held her hand, his thumb tracing slow circles across her palm.
"I'll be back," he whispered, eyes full of dreams and something deeper love. "No matter how far I go, how long it takes… I'll find my way home to you."
Elijah was leaving to join the army, chasing a future that couldn't be found in their quiet countryside. Amaya wanted to be proud. She was proud but fear lingered behind her smile.
To seal the promise, she handed him a small paper heart, folded carefully with her handwriting inside: "Wherever you go, I'll wait under the almond tree."
He tucked it into his pocket and kissed her forehead.
