The treehouse was quieter today - not still but listening. Juno stepped inside, Lupi nestled in her pouch, and felt the air shift - like something was waiting to be found.
It was Kaylani who spotted it first.
"Look," she whispered, pointing to a crack in the floorboards.
Juno knelt beside her, brushing away dust and leaves. There, nestled in the shadows, was a stone - small, smooth, and faintly glowing. It pulsed with a soft light, like moonlight caught in a pebble.
Beside it lay a tiny pouch, stitched with a butterfly in faded thread. Inside, a twined cord shimmered - humble as a shoelace, until it caught the light.
"This looks like the thread Mama uses in the lanterns," Juno said softly. "The ones that burn through the weeks."
Solani nodded. "It's a relic. Someone left it here for a reason."
"Relic? What's that?" Juno inquired
"It's an item that means something to someone, it can be any item, but the person that keeps it has a memory with that item."
Kaylani wandered toward the corner and gasped.
"Look! There's a bookcase here!"
Tucked behind a curtain of ivy was a shelf, crooked but intact. On it sat a handful of books - some worn, some wrapped in cloth, one with the title Thistleverse Tales etched in gold.
"They're stories," Kaylani whispered. "There just old stories" Kalen said flatly
Kalen opened the book and started to read one and read aloud.
Outside, the wind stirred. The sky darkened. Rain began to fall - soft at first, then steady. A leak formed in the roof. Then another. The children exchanged glances. These weren't just stories - they were more.
Shielding the books they put it on the desk in a dry area and proceeded with trying to save the treehouse.
"We need buckets!" Juno said, grabbing jars from the shelf. "And towels!"
They scrambled to protect the books, the relics, the floor. It was messy, frantic, and strangely joyful.
By the time the rain slowed, the treehouse was damp but intact. They'd done their best - but it wasn't enough.
"We need help," Kalen said quietly.
Solani pointed toward the shed.
"There are more buckets inside - and some turned over just beyond it. Mama might be out there, working."
"Mama?" Juno echoed, startled. She hadn't heard much about Mrs. Mateo. Maybe it was time.
Everyone froze for a moment. This was Juno's first time hearing them mention the Reyes matriarch.
Who would run the distance? The shed felt far - and in the rain, even farther. The house was farther still. And the rain was picking up. Still, it seemed to slow down just a bit, and as Solani adjusted the lantern over by a mini seater by the wall, Juno brushed away the last layer of leaves and uncovered the pouch - small, soft, stitched with a butterfly in faded thread. She opened it carefully, expecting something ordinary.
Inside was a twined thread, delicate and shimmering. At first glance, it looked like a forgotten shoelace. But then it caught the light - and glowed.
Solani leaned in, eyes wide.
The dusty book on the desk began to glow - faintly, like embers stirred by breath. Its pages fluttered, responding to the thread in Juno's hand.
"Did you see that?" Kalen whispered.
Kaylani's eyes widened, expecting someone to move toward the book - but no one did. Not at first.
Juno, feeling brave, stepped forward. The others followed, close behind. She looked at each of them, confirming they too were seeing - or about to witness - the same thing.
Solani brushed off the top of the book. Etched on the front was the word Thistleverse. She opened it slowly. The dust shifted. The aged binds creaked, startling Kalen.
The wind blew through the treehouse, bringing splashes of water through the weathered cloth shades that hung over the windows.
A page turned, then another, teased by the wind. It landed on an illustration - of the item Juno was holding.
Kaylani leaned closer, breath catching.
"That's a Willow Wick," she whispered.
Juno blinked. "A what?"
"From Yelana," Solani murmured, pointing to the book and then the picture of a tree.
Solani read the page out loud. "The Willow Tree. They're made in the Sky Nest, carried by fairies. Left with or without a purpose. Found by accident... perhaps forgotten. Or not." Her voice trailed off as the wind picked up.
Kaylani reached out, reverent.
"Mama says they burn in lanterns that last through seasons. They hold memory."
Juno held the thread gently, feeling its warmth.
It didn't pulse like the stone.
But it remembered.
And Juno could feel it.
