Juno's eyes lingered on the lantern near Ms. Link's desk, its golden glow soft but steady, like it had been lit long ago and never quite went out. Beside it, a corkboard stretched across the wall - something she hadn't noticed before. It was filled with snapshots of smiling faces, furry companions, and handwritten notes in looping cursive and crayon scrawls.
"Thank you for saving Max."
"We'll never forget what you did for Luna."
"You helped us heal."
Juno held Lupi a little closer, her heart swelling with quiet gratitude. She read each note like a whisper from someone who had once stood where she stood now - worried, hopeful, and held. Lupi looked up at Juno in admiration and silently meowed once.
As she turned to leave, Kaylani and Kalen were already gathering their things, ready to walk with her. Solani had stayed behind to help her father, but just as Juno reached the door, she appeared - quiet, purposeful, holding a folded letter.
"For you," Solani said, offering it without ceremony. "If you accept. Read it. Hope to see you soon."
Juno blinked, surprised. "What is this for?"
Solani gave a brief smile, then turned back toward the exam room, clipboard in hand, duties called and today was the day that. She had been scheduled to help out in the clinic; she would definitely catch up with plans later, now she had more work to do.
Outside, the sun had shifted - warmer now, casting dappled light through the trees. Kaylani and Kalen stood with Marbles, who barked once in greeting and nudged Juno's leg with his nose.
"Ready?" Kaylani asked, already bouncing ahead.
Juno tucked the letter into her pouch beside Lupi and nodded. She didn't know what it said yet, but something in Solani's eyes had felt like a beginning.
They started down the path together - three children, one kitten, and a dog with a tail like a metronome of joy. The trees whispered above them, and somewhere in the distance, a forgotten treehouse waited to be remembered.
