On the 24th of January, just after recess, Yugal came running into class.
Yugal burst into the classroom, breathless, his voice slicing through the hum of chatter.
"Sneha's in the visitor room - with Gaurav. They're heading out for a school quiz competition!"
Time didn't slow down - it collapsed. I was already moving before the words fully registered, my heart pounding like a war drum. The corridor blurred around me, a tunnel of fluorescent lights and echoing footsteps. I reached the gate. It was open. And there she was.
Sneha stood inside, radiant and distant, her presence commanding the room like a quiet storm. Gaurav hovered beside her, papers in hand, talking - but I didn't hear him. All I saw was her. Four meters away. Close enough to touch, yet impossibly far.
"Sneha!" I called out, my voice cracking with hope and desperation.
She turned.
Her eyes met mine, and for a heartbeat, the world held its breath. I searched her
face for something - recognition, warmth, anything. But her expression was carved
from stone. And then, with the precision of a blade, she spoke.
"I won't talk to you."
Four words. No scream. No fury. Just finality.
The silence that followed was deafening. Gaurav looked away. The air thickened. My chest tightened. I wanted to speak, to plead, to rewind time and undo whatever had led us here. But the gate behind me felt like a border I couldn't cross. She turned back to her papers, her back now the only answer I'd get.
And I stood there, outside the gate, shattered - not by volume, but by silence. Not by distance, but by those four words.
The world collapsed. Every dream, every fragile hope I had built, crumbled in an instant. I felt broken into pieces, too scattered to describe. From that day, we never spoke again.
But her memory stayed - innocent, untouchable, etched forever, with me and with the bracelet and the goodbye.
