I am moving on - or at least, that's what I keep telling myself. But why does he keep standing in the way of every conversation I try to have, like an unwelcome guest refusing to leave? Should I call it a nuisance or a grave distress that's been gnawing at my insides, bit by bit? Why is it that moving on, something that seems so effortless for everyone else, feels like trying to pull myself out of quicksand? I watch others move on as if they can just click away from the past, swiping it clean like a screen. So, why can't I?
What kind of trauma bond is this? One that weaves itself so tightly around me that I can't seem to escape its grip. It's as though my mind is holding onto memories like a desperate prisoner clinging to the chains that bind them. I avoid all other stimuli, ignoring the world around me, and yet his face - his ugly, lying face - keeps creeping into my thoughts, uninvited and relentless.
Everywhere I turn, it's there - reminding me of what I lost, or maybe what I never truly had. There's this hollowing feeling in my chest, like I'm losing pieces of myself, and I can't stop it. My mind, once a place of solace, is now my worst enemy. It churns out thoughts that I don't want to think, plays scenes I don't want to see, and keeps me awake with questions that have no answers.
I try to distract myself, but nothing sticks. Conversations with friends feel half-hearted because part of me is still stuck in a loop, replaying the betrayal, the lies, the breaking point over and over again. It's exhausting. It's maddening. I feel like I'm unraveling, thread by thread, as if my very essence is being pulled apart and there's nothing I can do to stop it.
I thought healing would come in time, that moving on would be a process I could map out, follow step by step. But this is not a straight line. It's a labyrinth, and I keep stumbling over the same memories, the same questions. What went wrong? Was it something I did? Was I not enough?
And yet, I know this isn't about answers anymore. It's about finding peace where there is none, trying to rebuild when the pieces don't fit like they used to. He haunts me, not just in my memories, but in the way I now doubt everything - my judgment, my worth, my ability to love and be loved.
My mind has become a battleground, and I am both the warrior and the enemy. Some days I win, pushing him out long enough to feel like myself again, even if only for a moment. But other days, the fight seems futile, and I let myself drown in the weight of it all.
Is this what moving on is supposed to feel like? This constant tug-of-war between wanting to forget and the impossibility of doing so? I don't know anymore. All I know is that I need to keep going, even when my mind is against me, even when the past feels like it's suffocating my future. I need to keep moving forward, even if it's slow, even if it feels like I'm crawling through the darkest parts of myself.
Because maybe - just maybe - on the other side of this war, there will be peace. Or at the very least, there will be me.
