"Hello, are you there? I believe he's cheating on both of us."
My phone slips slightly in my trembling hand. The message on the screen blurs as my mind struggles to process the words. My heart pounds against my chest, each beat a deafening thud. The world around me, once familiar and safe, suddenly feels foreign and hostile. I swallow hard, feeling the lump in my throat grow larger with every passing second. It's not just the words in the message; it's the sinking feeling that confirms what my heart has known all along but refused to believe.
For sixteen years, I have loved him - deeply, fiercely, blindly. We have built a life together, shared dreams, laughed at the little things, and weathered life's storms side by side. Or so I thought. But in this instant, it feels as though the past sixteen years have been an illusion, a carefully constructed façade crumbling before my eyes, leaving nothing but the ashes of trust behind.
I stare at my phone, frozen, unable to respond. The tears come slowly at first, rolling down my cheeks, hot and stinging, as though each one is a mark of the betrayal I now face. Then, like an unrelenting tide, they pour out of me, my chest heaving with the weight of a grief I cannot put into words.
The room around me is quiet, deceptively calm. The hum of the fan overhead, the distant sounds of traffic outside - they all seem trivial, as though the world beyond is oblivious to the hurricane tearing through my soul. My mind races back to the small moments, the signs I ignored - the late-night work trips, the sudden need for privacy on his phone, the lingering smell of a perfume I never wear.
How did I convince myself these were figments of my imagination? Why did I brush aside the gut feeling that something was wrong?
My phone buzzes again, pulling me back to the present. I don't want to look. I don't want to know more. But curiosity - or perhaps the need for confirmation - forces my eyes back to the screen.
"It's been going on for a while now. I didn't want to believe it either. But I have proof."
The words cut deeper than the first message. Proof. That's the dagger I wasn't ready to face. It's not just suspicion anymore, not just a nagging thought in the back of my mind. It's real. Tangible. And now I have to face it.
With shaking hands, I type out a response. My fingers hover over the keyboard for a moment. How do I respond to something like this? What could I possibly say to make this moment bearable?
"What kind of proof?" I finally write, my thumb hovering over the send button before reluctantly pressing it.
The reply comes faster than I expect. Photos. Screenshots of messages. Dates. Times. All of it is laid out in front of me like pieces of a puzzle I don't want to complete. But there it is, undeniable. He has been seeing someone else. He has been lying to me, pretending, smiling, making love to me while giving his heart, his time, his attention to someone else.
My mind spins. What now? Do I confront him? Scream at him? Demand answers? A part of me wants to. A part of me wants to see the look on his face when he realizes I know. But another part of me feels too broken to move, too shattered to even think straight.
I walk to the window, staring out at the world that carries on as if nothing has happened. It's an ordinary day. The sun is shining brightly, people are going about their lives, completely unaware that mine has just been torn apart. The absurdity of it makes me want to scream.
Sixteen years. We've been together for sixteen years. I gave him everything - my love, my trust, my future. And now, what's left? A hollow shell of a relationship built on lies. How long has he been pretending? Did he ever love me, or has it all been a lie?
My phone buzzes again, but I ignore it this time. I can't bear to read another word. Instead, I sink onto the couch, burying my face in my hands. The tears flow freely now, my sobs shaking my body as I cry for the love I've lost, for the trust that's been shattered, for the life I thought was real but now know was nothing more than an illusion.
I replay moments in my mind, searching for signs I missed. There was a time I believed we were inseparable, that our love could withstand anything. But now, I'm not sure I ever truly knew him.
The memories feel tainted now - every laugh, every shared secret, every kiss under the stars. It's as if those moments belonged to someone else, a woman who lived in blissful ignorance, blind to the truth unraveling behind her back. How did I let it get this far? How was I so blind?
Hours pass, and the ache in my chest deepens. I haven't moved from the couch. I haven't eaten. I haven't done anything but cry and think. The sun has long since set, and the darkness outside matches the emptiness inside me. I have no idea what to do next.
Can I leave him? Should I? Sixteen years of my life are tied to him, and the thought of walking away terrifies me as much as it feels necessary. Where do I even begin to start over?
The phone rings. It's him. I can't face him. Not yet.
"Hey," he says softly, oblivious to the storm that's torn through my heart. "How's your day going?"
It's a simple question, one he's asked a hundred times before, but tonight, it feels like a cruel joke.
I want to scream, to shout, to throw the proof in his face and watch him squirm. But I don't. Not yet.
Instead, I whisper, my voice barely audible, "How long?"
There's a pause. I can feel his confusion, even without looking at him. The silence stretches between us, heavy and suffocating.
Finally, he speaks, his voice unsure, "How long what?"
I clench my fists, my nails digging into my palms. I'm shaking, but I refuse to break now. "How long have you been lying to me?"
Another silence, but this one is different. It's thick with tension, with realization. He knows what I'm asking now. And I wait, my heart pounding in my chest, for the lie or the truth that will come next.
