Keisha had it all planned.
Friday night. Candles. Home-cooked dinner. Silk robe under her trench coat for the big reveal. Derrick had been "busy" lately, and she was going to remind him exactly what he had at home.
She even stopped at the store for his favorite dessert - salted caramel ice cream - because in her mind, the night was going to end with *both* of them feeling sweet.
She texted him on the way over: *Don't make plans. I'm surprising you tonight.*
He didn't reply, but she figured he was in the shower or finishing up work.
---
The Knock
She knocked twice. The TV was on inside. Footsteps approached. The door opened.
Keisha froze.
There was Monique.
In "Keisha's" silk robe.
Hair tied up in a scarf, makeup wiped clean, one leg tucked under her like she owned the place.
And in her hand? A spoon. Dipped in a pint of salted caramel ice cream. "Keisha's" salted caramel ice cream.
---
Keisha: "Monique… what the hell is this?"
Monique (calm, licking the spoon): "Oh… hey girl. Derrick said you weren't coming tonight. So… I came instead."
Derrick (from the couch, standing awkwardly): "Babe - "
Keisha (cutting him off, voice low but dangerous): "Which one of us is 'babe' right now, Derrick?"
---
The silence was thick. The only sound was the clink of Monique's spoon against the carton.
Keisha: "You… in my robe? Eating my ice cream? In *my man's* house?"
Monique (smirking): "Well, technically, it's *his* house. But, you know… details."
That was it. Years of fake smiles, subtle shade, and low-key competition exploded in that living room.
Keisha let her have it - all the side comments, all the moments she'd looked the other way, all the "best friend" hugs that were really just cover for a knife sliding in her back. Derrick stood there like a mannequin in a store nobody shopped at anymore.
---
Keisha finally stepped back, eyes cold.
"You were never a real friend, Monique. You were just waiting for a chance to prove it."
She dropped the ice cream she'd brought on the table, turned on her heel, and walked out - trench coat swaying like the closing curtain of a play.
Behind her, Monique called out, "Guess I'll see you around… *friend*."
But Keisha didn't even look back. She knew the friendship wasn't just over - it had been dead for years, tonight was just the funeral.
