The next morning felt like an exact replica of the one before. Mia went through the motions, stepping into the same routine, wearing the same expression. But something about today felt slightly different - an itch at the back of her mind, an unsettled feeling she couldn't quite shake.
At the coffee shop near her office, she placed her usual order and stood near the counter, waiting. As she scrolled through her phone, someone stepped beside her.
"Hey, do you mind if I sit here?" a voice asked.
Mia looked up. It was the same man she had seen in the shop before, always sitting by himself, reading a book. She had never spoken to him, but she recognized his presence in the background of her routine.
"Uh, yeah. Go ahead," she mumbled.
He nodded, sliding into the seat across from her with his coffee and worn paperback. For a moment, silence stretched between them, but it didn't feel uncomfortable. It was strange - she had never spoken to him before, yet his presence felt familiar.
"You come here a lot," he noted, flipping a page in his book.
She hesitated before nodding. "Yeah. You too."
He gave a small smile. "I guess we're both creatures of habit."
She studied him for a moment. His dark hair was slightly tousled, his glasses sliding down the bridge of his nose as he focused on his book. He seemed like someone who didn't mind being alone - but not in the same way she did. His solitude wasn't weighed down by loneliness; it seemed almost intentional, like a choice rather than a burden.
Mia wanted to ask what he was reading, but she swallowed the words. Instead, she gave a polite nod before looking away.
The encounter was brief, insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Yet, as she walked to work, she found herself thinking about it longer than she expected.
Perhaps she wasn't as invisible as she thought.
