The auditorium lights dimmed as the final performance came to an end. The audience erupted in applause, their cheers mixing with the buzzing energy of the day. JL's heart thudded in his chest. The performances had been intense, and Rhythm High had given it their all. They'd poured their hearts into every movement, every note.
JL wiped his sweaty palms on his pants and exchanged a quick look with Steven, who gave him an encouraging smile. Steven, despite his own nerves, was the rock the team leaned on. His calm demeanor had a way of steadying JL's racing thoughts.
Beside them, Shuaibo, ever the optimist, was busy hyping up the rest of the team. "We nailed it! Didn't you see that move? We had it!" His infectious energy lifted the spirits of the group, especially JL, who had been sinking into a quiet worry. But the truth was, despite their impressive performance, they knew the competition was fierce. Groove Institute, led by the legendary Changsub, was their biggest rival.
JL couldn't help but glance over at Juwon, his best friend since they were little. Juwon, who had always been his support system, was smiling at him with a reassuring look. But JL could sense the weight in his expression. Juwon had always been there for him. Would this be the last time they performed together?
"Don't think about it too much, JL," Steven's voice was soft, his hand resting on JL's shoulder. "Whatever happens, we still have each other. You've always got me."
JL smiled faintly. "Thanks, Steven." He appreciated his words, even though a knot twisted in his stomach.
It was now time for the announcements. JL stood beside Shuaibo, as their team anxiously awaited the results. Groove was the last to perform, and there was no denying that they had brought their A-game. The competition was brutal.
The Groove Institute team, led by the charismatic and talented Park Han, had stunned the audience with their performance. Park Han's voice, powerful and flawless, had taken the spotlight. The confidence in his every note spoke volumes about his status as the star student of Groove. The way his voice effortlessly blended with Kenta, whose deep, rich low tones brought a unique texture to the performance, had made the crowd go wild. Their combination was like a well-rehearsed symphony, smooth and perfectly timed, capturing the essence of what Groove stood for. No one in the audience could deny the sheer talent of Groove, and their victory seemed all but inevitable.
JL was quietly impressed, but also nervous. There was no doubt about it - Groove Institute was a force to be reckoned with.
As the lights came back on, Jay Park, the National Director, stood at the front, microphone in hand. The room fell silent as the buzz of anticipation filled the air.
"Thank you to all the teams for your incredible performances," Jay Park began. "It's time to announce the rankings for this year's event."
A hush swept over the auditorium. The tension was palpable.
"In first place, Groove Institute," Jay Park announced. A round of applause erupted, and the Groove students stood, their faces lighting up with pride. Changsub's eyes gleamed as he clapped for his team, his aura of confidence undeniable.
JL's heart sank. It was no surprise, but it still stung. Groove had won. He turned his attention to the other teams.
"Second place, Rhythm High," Jay Park continued. The crowd cheered, and Rhythm High's team exchanged smiles. They had done well, but there was a sadness in the air. They had fallen short, and the loss hurt more than any of them had expected.
"And in third place, Beat Music High," Jay Park concluded. The students of Beat cheered, proud of their efforts despite the odds.
JL didn't feel like celebrating, though. He looked around at his teammates, but his gaze settled on Juwon, his childhood best friend. Juwon, who had always been by his side, had been scouted by Changsub after the main performances. His face fell, the disappointment clear in his eyes.
The moment Jay Park announced Changsub would be selecting two students from the losing schools, everyone's attention shifted to the stage. Juwon was the first name to be called. JL's stomach twisted as he stood motionless, his heart racing.
"Juwon," Changsub called, his voice echoing throughout the auditorium.
Juwon blinked, stunned, before a bittersweet smile spread across his face. He glanced at JL, whose eyes were wide, full of unspoken emotions. Their friendship meant everything to JL. Losing him - no, not losing him, just the idea of not seeing him every day in school - it was too much to bear.
"I'm so proud of you," JL whispered, his voice barely audible, but Juwon heard him.
"You'll always be my younger brother," JL added, smiling through his sadness.
But the words felt hollow. Juwon's departure was inevitable, and it was a feeling JL hadn't fully accepted.
As the team started to move toward the backstage area, the tension lifted slightly. It wasn't easy, but they tried to cheer each other up. Steven clapped JL on the back, sending a reassuring grin his way.
"You know what? We're still a team. And we're gonna keep rocking it, no matter what," Steven said, his tone light.
Shuaibo laughed, his loud voice breaking through the quiet. "Hey, JL, you're gonna have to teach me all those crazy moves. We can't let Groove have all the fun!"
JL chuckled, grateful for his friends' light-heartedness. Even Chih En, who had been silent for most of the day, suddenly smirked.
"If you say one more thing about teaching people how to dance, I'm out," Chih En teased, his nonchalant attitude a welcome contrast to the tension. JL let out a small laugh, his heart warming at the sight of his friends trying to lift his spirits.
Later, the team gathered in their usual hangout spot, the quiet laughter and banter filling the room. JL couldn't help but feel a pang in his chest when he thought of Juwon, but Steven's gentle reminder helped ease his sorrow.
"Come on, we're still family, right? Nothing changes. We'll meet up with Juwon outside of school. You're gonna see him again, JL. You have us."
And with that, the sadness was pushed aside, at least for the moment. JL looked around at his friends - his real family. He knew they'd be there for him, always.
Meanwhile, Chih En, ever the enigma, slid his phone from his pocket. The photo he had kept hidden inside its transparent casing was there. It was from the random photo booth they had taken together, JL and him - unaware that the smile on JL's face was something Chih En would treasure.
