Winter woke up the next morning with a knot in her stomach. Today marked the last day of her summer break before she headed to law school in the big city. Kai had suggested they meet at their favorite café, but as much as she looked forward to it, she dreaded the conversation looming ahead.
She arrived first, the aroma of fresh coffee filling the air around her, offering some comfort. Winter fiddled with her hands, her mind racing with thoughts of what this moment could mean for their future.
When Kai arrived, his smile lit up the dim café, but it quickly faded as he noticed Winter's somber expression. "Hey," he said, sliding into the seat across from her. "You okay?"
His concern made her heart clench. "I don't know," she admitted. "I feel like everything is changing, and I'm the one about to leave. What will happen to us?"
Kai reached across the table, his touch grounding her. "We'll figure it out, right? We can text, call... make it work."
"As much as I want that, I can't ignore the doubts," Winter said, her voice trembling. "What if being apart changes how we feel?"
Kai's jaw tightened, a flicker of frustration crossing his face. "Is that what you really believe? That it takes distance to change love?"
His words struck a chord. "What if you meet someone else while I'm gone?"
"The only person I want to be with is you," he said firmly. "But how can we create something lasting if you keep holding onto that fear?"
Winter's heart raced as she processed his words. Uncertainty washed over her, fighting against the love she felt for him and the dreams she held close.
Suddenly, the door swung open, and the warm summer breeze swept through the café. Lia stood there, her expression unreadable. As she spotted them together, hesitation flickered in her eyes, but she stepped in, determined.
"Hey, I was in the neighborhood," she said, forcing a smile.
Kai's expression shifted from irritation to concern as he sensed the tension in the air. "Lia, hey. We were just - "
"I can see that," she interrupted, her voice laced with sarcasm. "I'll come back later."
"Wait," Kai said, standing up. "No, we need to talk about this." The air grew thick with tension, a storm waiting to break free.
Winter felt like a spectator, trapped between their hidden conflicts. Kai's gaze darted between the two women, the unspoken words echoing loudly in the silence.
