The sun dipped low in the sky as Winter made her way across campus the next day, her stomach twisted in nervous knots. Classes had been unbearable; all she could think about was that fleeting glance with Kai, one that lingered like an unspoken promise. Following Mia's encouragement, she was determined to see him again, to confront their past and perhaps carve a new path forward. Each step felt weighted by yesterday's emotions, but a thin thread of hope pulled her onward.
"Here goes nothing," she muttered to herself, pushing through the heavy glass doors of the student center. The aroma of coffee wafted around her, mingling with whispers and laughter, but Winter's goal was singular: the café at the far end, where it was said Kai often hung out between classes.
As she approached the counter, her eyes scanned for familiar faces amid the bustling crowd. But instead, they landed on a figure she hadn't expected to see. Lia. With her perfectly styled blonde hair and effortless confidence, Kai's girlfriend stood out, holding court at a table with a few friends.
"So, there's your rival," she heard a voice say behind her. Mia had followed her in, an amused smirk playing on her lips.
"Great," Winter replied through clenched teeth. When Lia and Kai started dating, it had been a whirlwind - the kind that left Winter feeling unmoored, like the ground had been pulled from under her. Lia was charming to others but had a knack for making Winter feel small.
"Maybe you could go say hi?" Mia prodded. "You've got nothing to lose, right?"
"Everything," Winter shot back, shaking her head. "What if she tells him I was lurking around?"
"Then you'll have your answer," Mia said nonchalantly, as if it were the simplest thing in the world. "Besides, you can't avoid her forever."
Winter took a deep breath, steeling herself against the rising tide of uncertainty. She was determined not to let Lia intimidate her; if she saw Kai, she would speak up, no matter the risk.
"But what do I even say?" she murmured, glancing again toward the table where Lia sat.
"Start with 'Hey!' and see where it goes," Mia replied, her tone teasing but her eyes filled with sincerity. "I'll be right here if you need me."
"Thanks," Winter replied, trying to muster a smile. She pushed her shoulders back and crossed the room, bracing for whatever confrontation awaited her.
As she reached the table, Winter tried to ignore the tightness in her chest. Lia looked up, her brown eyes narrowing as she recognized Winter. A flicker of confusion passed over her features, soon replaced by an almost predatory smile.
"Well, if it isn't our little law student," Lia drawled, exuding an air of casual superiority. "What brings you over here? Are you lost?"
"No, I - " Winter stopped, suddenly aware of how quiet it had become around them. Every set of eyes seemed to turn toward her, and she felt the weight of their scrutiny. "I was just… looking for Kai."
"Looking for Kai?" Lia's smile widened, revealing teeth too perfect for sympathy. "How quaint. He's in class right now."
"Oh." Winter felt herself wilting under Lia's gaze, but she pushed through. "I just wanted to talk to him."
"Right." Lia leaned back in her chair, twirling a strand of hair around her finger in that annoying way she had. "How's that working out for you? Heard you two ran into each other yesterday."
"Yeah, we did," Winter replied, forcing herself to keep her tone even. "It was a surprise. It's been a long time."
"Ten years, if I'm counting correctly," Lia said, her voice dripping with mock concern. "Funny how life works. You could have all those years to stay in touch, and then poof - you just vanish."
Winter felt her cheeks heat up but steeled herself. "I didn't choose that, Lia. You don't know what happened back then."
"Yes, I do. You disappeared, and he found someone else." Lia's eyes sparkled with a mix of mischief and confidence. "You can cry over spilled milk all you want, but it's too late now. We're happy together."
"Lia, can you - " Mia chimed in, stepping forward, her protective instincts flaring.
"No, Mia," Lia waved her off dismissively. "This is personal." Her attention returned to Winter. "You're a little late to the game, sweetheart. Kai and I have shared some pretty deep moments lately."
Winter swallowed hard, feeling the sting of words that cut too close to heart. "Look, I'm not trying to intrude. I just want to know if he remembers me."
"Aww, you're still hung up on him! How sweet," Lia mocked, her tone feigning sincerity. "But hey, if it makes you feel any better, he mentioned your name once or twice. While we were on a romantic getaway, of course. But I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's better to let the past stay buried."
Suddenly, a familiar voice broke through the tension. "Lia! I thought I'd find you here!"
Winter turned, heart racing, as Kai strode into the café, his presence commanding the room. The moment he saw her, his expression shifted - surprise mixed with something deeper, something that made her pulse quicken.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, casually slipping into the chair next to Lia without taking his eyes off Winter.
"I, uh…" Winter fumbled, momentarily lost in his green gaze. "I wanted to talk to you."
"Oh, really?" Lia interjected, feigning innocence while casting an amused look at Kai. "Winter's been here looking for you. How touching."
Kai's brow furrowed as he looked between the two women. "What's going on?"
"It's nothing. Just catching up on old times," Lia said lightly, but her venomous smile returned. "I'll let you two have your precious moment."
He watched her leave, and Winter found herself leaning forward as Kai's attention returned to her, the initial surprise in his eyes replaced by concern.
"Hey, are you okay?" he asked softly, his voice low enough for only her to hear.
"I - yeah," Winter stumbled, her heart racing. "I just wanted to see you. I didn't know Lia would be here."
"Don't let her get to you," he said, a hint of frustration flickering across his features. "She can be - "
"Brutal?" Winter offered, her lips curling into a faint smile.
"More like overly dramatic," he replied, but his eyes held warmth. "I'm glad you're here. Can we talk?"
"Of course," Winter breathed, relief flooding her as she felt the weight of humiliation begin to lift. The tension that had ensnared her moments ago began to dissipate now that she had him close.
"Good," Kai said, glancing around as if assessing the environment. "Let's find somewhere quieter."
He gestured for her to follow, and as he stood, Winter had a small moment of clarity: this was the boy she once knew, the boy she shared laughter and tears with. And despite the years apart, the familiarity surged between them like an unbroken thread.
"Thanks for coming over," Kai said as they navigated their way through the throngs of students. "I didn't expect to see you yesterday, and I'm sorry I didn't have time to talk."
"You caught me off guard, that's all," Winter replied. "High school feels like another lifetime ago, doesn't it?"
"It really does. Some days I still can't believe I'm in med school," he said, running a hand through his hair, his frustration fading back into amusement. "But seeing you again feels like a piece of home I didn't know I missed."
Winter felt warmth bloom in her chest, and she couldn't help but smile. "Home has its way of pulling you back."
They settled into a small, secluded corner of the café, the noise of students slowly receding. "So, how's law school treating you? Any wild stories?" Kai asked.
"Plenty," she said, laughing softly. "But mostly it's just reading, frustrating professors, and fighting against my introverted nature."
"I always thought you were the bravest among us," Kai said, leaning closer, his green eyes searching hers. "You fought for what you believed in even back in the day."
Winter felt her cheeks warm under his gaze. "That's a compliment I didn't see coming."
"Just speaking the truth," he replied, his expression shifting with sincerity. "I missed you, you know? After everything changed…"
The words hung in the air, laden with history and emotion. Winter swallowed, caught between the warmth of his presence and the shadow of Lia's reminder of their past. "I missed you too, Kai. You were a huge part of my life."
"But I left," he said, his tone heavy. "And that must have hurt."
"It did," Winter admitted softly. "But life is so complicated. I just learned to… cope, I guess. Seeing you yesterday stirred up emotions I thought I had buried."
"Emotions don't go away just because you ignore them," he replied, his voice soft but firm. "They linger until you face them."
"Like us," she said, the realization dawning upon her.
He nodded. "I want to know how you've been, everything. But Lia complicates things. She's very… protective of her space."
"I can't change the past," Winter said, feeling the weight of the present in her chest. "And I don't want to come between you two."
"We are not what you think we are," Kai stated, determination flashing in his eyes. "I care about her, but - "
"But?" Winter pressed, heart racing.
"There's a part of me that remembers everything we shared," he confessed. "That part has never truly faded."
Winter's breath hitched, the air thick with unspoken possibilities. Together, they stood at a crossroads, and as vulnerability crackled between them, the last remnants of their childhood friendship flickered back to life, urging them to choose.
Winter could feel the stakes rising, the warmth of rekindled hope battling against fear. All she had to do was take the leap Kai had encouraged her to consider.
"Can we find our way back?" she asked softly, her voice trembling slightly but laced with determination.
Kai met her gaze with an intensity that left her breathless. "I'd like to find out. Together."
And in that moment, the barrier between the past and present began to crumble as they dared to envision a future where old wounds could heal. The journey would be tumultuous, dotted with uncertainty and the complications of love and friendship, but for the first time in years, Winter felt ready to embrace every breathtaking moment it had to offer.
