Before Leo could reach for the lantern again, a low growl echoed through the cave. He froze, his heart racing.
"You have come far, Prince Leo," a voice boomed from the darkness. The voice was deep, like thunder, and seemed to vibrate in his bones.
A large shape moved from the shadows, stepping into the light. A glowing wolf, her fur silver and shining like stars, appeared before him. Her eyes glowed with an ancient, knowing light, and she watched him with a steady gaze.
"I am the Guardian of Light," the wolf said, her voice gentle yet powerful. "You have proven yourself worthy by facing the truth. But now, you must prove your courage."
Leo swallowed, feeling a mixture of awe and nervousness. He had read stories about the Guardian of Light - an ancient protector who watched over the Lantern of Truth, but he had never imagined meeting her face to face.
"What must I do?" Leo asked, his voice steady but uncertain.
The wolf circled him slowly, her paws making no sound on the cave floor. "The lantern will show you the truth, Prince Leo, but truth alone is not enough. You must now show that you can bear it."
Leo felt a weight settle on his chest. What did she mean? He had faced his fears, admitted his lies, and found the lantern. Surely that was enough.
"The truth has power," the wolf continued. "But it also brings responsibility. Your kingdom is in darkness because the truth was hidden for too long. Many people live in fear of it. But those who are truly brave can face it without hesitation."
Leo nodded slowly, trying to understand. "I've faced my own truth... but what do you mean by bearing it?"
The wolf stopped in front of him, her eyes locking onto his. "The lantern will only shine if you are willing to carry its light, even in the darkest times. The truth will not always be easy to accept, and it will not always be welcomed. But true courage is knowing that you must carry it anyway."
Leo felt a surge of understanding. He had faced his own fears - admitted his lies, his weaknesses, and his mistakes. But now he was being asked to do something even harder: carry that honesty with him and face whatever challenges came next.
"I will carry the light," Leo said with determination. "I will not let it fade."
The wolf gave him a slow, approving nod. "Very well. The lantern is yours. But remember, the true test begins now. You have found the truth, but now you must lead others to it. Only then will your kingdom see the light once again.**"
With a graceful movement, the wolf stepped aside, revealing the path back to the kingdom. The lantern, now glowing brightly in Leo's hands, seemed to pulse with a warmth that filled him with newfound strength.
Leo thanked the Guardian of Light and turned to leave. As he walked back toward the cave's entrance, he knew that the hardest part of his journey was yet to come. He would have to share the truth with his kingdom, even though it might be difficult.
But he was ready.
For the first time in his life, he knew that honesty was not just about facing his own truth - it was about being strong enough to share it with others. And that was the key to bringing light back to Veritas.
