In the far south of Akanga, where the earth turns deep red beneath the afternoon sun and the wind carries whispers through the acacia trees, there was a small village called Oruva.
Life there moved with the rhythm of the land.
At sunrise, smoke curled gently from cooking fires.
Goats bleated lazily.
And women with dark, glowing skin walked toward the river with clay pots balanced on their heads.
Among them were the Numba girls.
Their hair was thick and braided close to the scalp.
Small waist beads rested against their hips, clicking softly as they walked.
Their skirts were short and woven from tough grasses that swayed with every step.
But what people remembered most about them…
was their laughter.
Among the young men of Oruva was Kano.
Kano had strong shoulders and thoughtful eyes, but his mind often wandered far beyond the horizon. While the other men spoke proudly of their cattle and land, Kano spoke of distant towns, government halls, and a life larger than the quiet village that had raised him.
And every morning, just after the first light touched the hills, Lela passed his family’s hut.
She carried a clay pot.
Her waist beads made a gentle rhythm against her skin.
Her smile was calm, warm… patient.
“Morning, Kano,” she would say.
And Kano would nod, sometimes smiling, sometimes distracted by dreams of a world he had not yet seen.
One evening, just before sunset, they sat beneath a tall marula tree near the edge of the village, the place where they had first met as children, when their legs were still dusty from running through the fields.
“I will leave Oruva one day,” Kano told her.
The sun painted the sky orange and gold.
“There is more out there than this.”
Lela looked across the quiet land.
“Maybe,” she said softly.
“But sometimes the heart only understands the value of home when it is far away from it.”
Kano laughed gently.
And not long after that… he left.
The Years Away
In the towns beyond the desert, Kano chased the life he had imagined.
He worked hard.
He learned quickly.
People began to notice him.
The boy from Oruva became a man people listened to.
Years passed.
Power came.
Responsibility came.
And eventually, Kano was elected governor of the region he now called home.
But some nights, long after midnight, when the city had finally quieted… something unsettled him.
He searched for warmth.
He met beautiful women.
Sophisticated women from powerful families.
Women who admired his success.
But none of them carried the quiet ease that once lived in the mornings of Oruva.
None of them sounded like beads softly clicking in the dawn.
Meanwhile…
Lela had also left the village years later.
She traveled farther than she had ever imagined.
Cities welcomed her beauty.
Men from wealthy families admired her calm presence.
Dynasties invited her into rooms filled with music and wine.
But the city’s attention felt loud… and strangely hollow.
At three in the morning, when the streets outside finally slept, Lela often found herself staring through tall windows, thinking of red earth and slow mornings.
Thinking of Kano.
Eventually she began asking travelers from the south if they had heard of him.
Small notes traveled between villages.
Questions whispered through markets.
Until one day the answer finally returned.
Kano was no longer the restless boy who had left Oruva.
He had become a respected leader.
A governor.
And strangely…
He had never married.
The Return
One warm evening, just as the sun began to fall behind the hills, Lela returned to Oruva.
The village looked smaller than she remembered.
But the wind felt the same.
The scent of firewood.
The distant sound of goats.
And the marula tree still stood quietly at the edge of the village.
At dusk, someone else was standing there.
Kano.
Older now.
Stronger.
But the same thoughtful eyes.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Years of memories moved silently between them.
Running through fields as children.
Hiding behind huts during games.
Laughing under the same tree where they now stood.
The sky slowly darkened.
Lela stepped closer.
“You finally came back,” Kano said quietly.
“And you finally stayed,” she replied.
They both laughed softly, the kind of laugh that only comes when time has done its work.
And in that quiet moment, under the marula tree where their story had begun, they leaned toward each other.
The kiss was not rushed.
It carried years inside it.
They stayed there for a long time, speaking, remembering, sitting close the way they had when they were young and fearless.
For a brief night, the world outside Oruva did not exist.
Just the red earth.
The stars.
And two hearts that had traveled far only to find the same place again.
And then…
Morning came.
The same way it always had.
The sun rose slowly over Oruva.
The Numba girls walked to the river with clay pots on their heads.
Waist beads clicked softly in the quiet air.
And beneath the marula tree, Kano stood alone for a moment, watching the village wake.
Some stories are not meant to last forever.
Some are meant to remind us of something deeper.
That love, like home, does not disappear.
It simply waits
for the moment when two wandering hearts remember where they truly belong.
And in Oruva, as the village filled with morning light…
people would sometimes say they saw Kano smile at the sound of beads in the distance.
As if remembering a night that belonged only to the two of them.
And no one ever asked what happened after that.
