Mother's Love
Episode 1 - The Cry of a New Dawn
The night was heavy with silence in the small village of Bekwarra. The moon floated faintly behind drifting clouds, its pale light spilling across the thatched roofs and narrow pathways of the community. In one mud house at the edge of the village, Ogbene lay on an old raffia mat, her body drenched in sweat. The midwife, Mama oshimowere, leaned over her, urging her to push once more.
Her cries echoed into the night, carrying the weight of both pain and longing. She was young, barely twenty-three, yet her eyes were already seasoned with grief. Just a few months earlier, her husband, Oko , had died in a road accident, leaving her to face the world alone. The loss was fresh, the wound still raw, and now life demanded she summon strength to bring forth a child into that emptiness.
"Push, Ogbene! Just one more time!" Mama oshimowere commanded, her wrinkled hands steady despite her urgency.
With one last scream, Ogbene felt a rush of release, and moments later, the cries of a newborn pierced through the silence of the village. The sound was sharp, insistent, and alive. Mama oshimowere lifted the squirming baby and wrapped him in a faded cloth.
"It is a boy," she announced with a tired smile, placing the baby on Ogbene's chest.
Tears streamed down Ogbene's face - not only from exhaustion but from the overwhelming mix of joy and sorrow. She pressed her lips against the child's damp forehead and whispered, "ifadare… my treasure."
The boy's tiny fists curled as though holding onto life itself. Ogbee knew then that the burden of her pain had found a purpose. She was no longer just a grieving widow; she was a mother.
That night, as the baby's cries filled the hut, Ogbene sat awake, rocking him in her arms. The oil lamp flickered, casting shadows on the cracked walls. She spoke softly to her son, her voice trembling but firm.
"I will be both father and mother to you. You will not lack love, my child. You will grow strong. You will know joy, even if it costs me everything."
Outside, the roosters stirred, heralding the arrival of dawn. But for Ogbene, a new dawn had already begun. The cry of her newborn son was now her heartbeat, her purpose, her destiny.
She did not yet know the road ahead would be filled with hunger, shame, and sacrifice. But she also did not know how deeply her love would shape the boy into a man the world would one day celebrate.
The story of Ogbene and ifadare had just begun.
