Monsoon Letters: Episode 1
Chapter One: The First Rain
The air smelled different. The kind of earthy scent that always filled the heart with nostalgia. It had been a long, dry summer, and today the clouds had gathered, thick and heavy, as if holding back a secret. It was the kind of rain that was anticipated, even longed for, after months of unrelenting heat. But for Riya, standing by her bedroom window, looking at the first raindrops trickle down the glass, it meant more than just the relief of a monsoon.
It had been ten years since she last saw him - Ayaan.
They had been young then, caught in a whirlwind romance that neither of them could have predicted. They were both just beginning to chase their dreams when their paths had crossed on one of the many rainy evenings at the old chaiwala's shop near the university campus. He had smiled at her, shy yet daring, and she had fallen for that smile. The monsoon had a way of making everything feel possible, like the sky itself was opening up and pouring down possibilities.
But that was a long time ago. The monsoon was back, but the boy with the smile was gone.
Chapter Two: The Letters Begin
It started with a letter.
The first one had arrived in her mailbox on a rainy Thursday afternoon. She hadn't been expecting it. Riya opened it carefully, fingers trembling. The handwriting on the envelope was familiar, yet it felt distant. Ayaan's unmistakable cursive.
"Dear Riya," the letter began.
"It's been years, hasn't it? And yet, every monsoon, I find myself thinking of you, the sound of the rain on our rooftop, the scent of the wet earth, and the feel of your hand in mine. I don't know what compelled me to write to you after all this time, but I felt as though the rain brought me back to you. Maybe I've missed you more than I allowed myself to admit."
Riya's heart beat faster as she read those words, so familiar, yet wrapped in the silence of time. The letter had arrived at the perfect moment, as if the rain had carried it to her on its own wings.
Chapter Three: Remembering Us
The rain had always been their backdrop - a constant companion to their love story. Every monsoon, Ayaan and Riya had made promises to each other beneath the shelter of the old banyan tree near the university. That tree, the one they had carved their initials into all those years ago, still stood tall in her memories.
As the rain poured heavily that evening, Riya sat by her window, holding Ayaan's letter in her hands, the words smudging slightly under the weight of her tears. She couldn't help but wonder - why now? What had taken him so long to write? And why had he chosen to do so now, when everything in her life seemed to have moved on?
But then again, maybe she had never really moved on.
The years had passed, but her heart still belonged to the boy who had once loved her with a kind of purity that the world didn't understand. He was the first love, the one who changed everything. It didn't matter that life had led them in different directions, that he had taken a job overseas, that their relationship had ended in heartbreak. The monsoon always brought him back.
Chapter Four: The Second Letter
The second letter arrived the following week. It was just as emotional, just as raw, and this time, it wasn't just words - it was a piece of himself he had sent through the ink. In his letter, Ayaan confessed that he had never stopped loving her, despite the years of silence. He had married someone else, tried to forget, but the monsoon always reminded him of her, of the life they had once shared.
"I've often wondered," he wrote, "whether fate would ever bring us back together. But this letter isn't about that. It's about telling you what I should have told you ten years ago - what I should have said on that last rainy night when we stood by the river, hands trembling in each other's grasp, promising forever, yet knowing the world would pull us apart."
As Riya read those words, she felt a wave of emotion surge within her. Her heart yearned for the boy she had lost, the boy who had once made her feel like the only person in the world. But the years had changed them both. She was no longer the naïve girl who had believed in fairytales, and he was no longer the dreamy-eyed boy she had once known.
Still, the letters continued to arrive. Each one more personal, more vulnerable than the last. Ayaan began to pour out his soul to her, telling her of his travels, his career, his life after the two of them parted ways. She learned of the woman he married, the family he built, but also the loneliness he had felt. The letters were filled with regret and hope, as if he were trying to reconcile the past with the present.
Chapter Five: The Confession
One evening, as the monsoon reached its peak, Riya received another letter. This one was different.
"Dear Riya," it began. "This might be my last letter to you. I've done a lot of thinking these past few months. I can no longer live with the guilt of not being true to myself, to you. I have spent years blaming myself for how things ended between us. But the truth is, I was always scared - scared that we weren't meant to be, scared that I wasn't enough for you. And so, I ran away from the one thing that was real in my life - us. But today, as the rain falls outside my window, I realize that it wasn't you who needed to change, it was me."
Riya's heart pounded in her chest as she read those words. She felt both elated and devastated. Ayaan had admitted everything she had always feared, and yet, somehow, it felt like closure. He had finally acknowledged the truth.
Chapter Six: The Reunion
The monsoon had come to an end, and the sun began to peek through the clouds. Riya sat on her balcony, her phone in hand. She had been reading the letters over and over again, trying to make sense of it all. But she knew, deep down, that she had a choice to make. Should she meet him? Should she let the past into her present?
And then, the phone rang.
It was him.
"Riya," Ayaan's voice crackled through the line, carrying with it a familiar warmth. "I know it's been a long time, but I can't help but wonder… should we meet? For the first time in ten years, I feel like we're both ready. What do you say?"
