The music drifted through the ballroom as conversations blended into the sound of crystal glasses and polite laughter.
To everyone else, it was another glamorous charity gala.
To Emily Carter, it was a battlefield.
She discreetly adjusted the tiny earpiece hidden beneath her hair.
"Status?" Walker's voice whispered.
"So far, nothing suspicious," Emily replied quietly. "Everyone looks... comfortable."
"That's exactly why they're dangerous."
Emily continued through the crowd, memorizing faces and conversations. Every smile seemed rehearsed. Every handshake felt calculated.
At the opposite end of the ballroom, Victoria Moretti watched everything from a distance.
She never liked parties.
People wore expensive clothes and fake smiles, pretending they weren't afraid of her.
Fear was exhausting.
One of the city's wealthiest businessmen approached her.
"Miss Moretti, another successful gala."
Victoria smiled politely.
"Thank you for supporting the foundation."
He laughed nervously.
"The city is lucky to have someone so generous."
Victoria almost smiled.
If only you knew.
Her bodyguard Luca stepped beside her.
"We've identified two undercover officers."
Victoria didn't even look at him.
"And?"
"They're watching the east wing."
"Let them watch."
Luca hesitated.
"But there's another woman."
"The one from last night."
Victoria slowly turned.
"Emily Carter?"
"We believe so."
Victoria's eyes searched the crowded ballroom.
She found Emily speaking with a judge near the balcony.
Elegant.
Confident.
Yet there was something different about her.
She didn't look greedy.
She looked... genuine.
"Keep everyone away from her," Victoria said quietly.
Luca frowned.
"You think she's dangerous?"
Victoria didn't answer.
She wasn't sure who she was trying to protect.
Emily accepted a glass of sparkling water from a waiter.
She never drank while working.
As she walked toward the balcony, she noticed movement in the hallway beyond the ballroom.
A man in a gray suit slipped through a door marked Private.
Emily glanced around.
No one seemed to notice.
She quietly followed him.
The hallway was silent.
Luxury paintings covered the walls.
The man disappeared into an office.
Emily carefully moved closer.
The door wasn't fully closed.
Voices.
"...shipment arrives Friday."
"...the harbor..."
"...no mistakes this time."
Emily's pulse quickened.
She slowly reached inside her purse and activated the tiny recording device hidden inside.
Every word mattered.
Suddenly...
A hand gently touched her shoulder.
Emily spun around.
Victoria Moretti stood behind her.
Only inches away.
For a second...
Neither of them spoke.
Victoria's blue eyes studied Emily's face.
"You seem lost."
Emily forced a calm smile.
"I was looking for the restroom."
Victoria raised an eyebrow.
"The restroom is in the opposite direction."
Emily laughed softly.
"I guess I'm terrible with directions."
Victoria remained silent for a moment.
Then...
"This part of the building isn't open to guests."
"I'd hate for someone to ruin such a beautiful evening."
There was no anger in her voice.
Only curiosity.
Emily nodded.
"Thank you."
As she walked away, she could feel Victoria watching her.
Victoria remained outside the office.
She knew Emily had heard something.
The question was...
How much?
Luca approached.
"Should we confiscate the recording?"
Victoria looked toward the ballroom.
"No."
Luca stared at her.
"You're letting an FBI agent walk away?"
Victoria's expression hardened.
"If she had real evidence..."
"...she wouldn't have left."
Luca wasn't convinced.
Neither was Victoria.
Later that evening...
A charity auction began.
The ballroom filled with applause as priceless artwork was sold for millions.
Emily blended into the crowd once more.
She had almost reached the exit when someone suddenly grabbed her wrist.
She instinctively twisted free and stepped into a defensive stance.
Victoria immediately raised both hands.
"I'm not here to fight."
Emily relaxed slightly.
"I've had a long evening."
"So have I."
For the first time...
They stood alone.
No bodyguards.
No agents.
Just two strangers surrounded by music.
Victoria tilted her head.
"I don't believe we've met."
Emily smiled politely.
"Emily."
"Victoria."
Neither offered a surname.
Neither asked.
"Do you come to events like this often?" Victoria asked.
Emily shrugged.
"Not really."
"I'm more comfortable in places without tuxedos."
A faint smile appeared on Victoria's face.
"I know exactly what you mean."
Emily blinked.
For a brief moment...
Victoria didn't seem like the feared woman from the FBI files.
She seemed lonely.
Human.
Before either of them could say another word, Luca appeared.
"Miss Moretti."
His tone was enough.
Business.
Victoria looked back at Emily.
"It was nice meeting you."
"You too."
Victoria walked away without looking back.
Emily watched her disappear into the crowd.
Something felt wrong.
The woman she had just spoken to...
Didn't match the monster described in every FBI report.
Near midnight...
The gala ended.
Guests slowly left the building.
Emily climbed into the FBI vehicle.
Walker looked at her.
"Did you get anything useful?"
Emily handed him the recording device.
"I'm not sure."
Walker pressed play.
Static.
Silence.
Nothing else.
Emily frowned.
"That's impossible."
Someone had erased every second of the recording.
Across the city...
Victoria sat alone in the back of her limousine.
Luca glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
"You had the technician wipe the recording remotely."
Victoria nodded.
"She heard enough to become suspicious."
"You could've had her arrested."
Victoria looked out at the lights of Manhattan.
"I could have."
Luca waited.
Victoria finally spoke.
"But then..."
"...I wouldn't get the chance to meet her again."
For the first time in years, the powerful queen of New York's underworld was thinking about someone other than power, loyalty... or revenge.
And for the first time in Emily Carter's career...
A target had become impossible to forget.
