Spring arrived quietly along the Hudson River.
The snow had melted.
The old oak tree was covered in fresh green leaves once again, and the garden surrounding the white house was alive with roses and wildflowers.
Emily stood in front of the bedroom mirror, smoothing the sleeves of her ivory suit.
She took a deep breath.
There had been countless moments in her life when she had faced danger without fear.
Today was different.
Today...
She was nervous.
A gentle knock came at the door.
"Come in."
Father Michael entered with a warm smile.
"You look exactly the way your father looked on his wedding day."
Emily laughed softly.
"Nervous?"
Father Michael nodded.
"Completely."
She smiled.
"That actually makes me feel better."
He offered her his arm.
"Ready?"
Emily looked out the window toward the old oak tree.
Rows of white chairs had been placed beneath its branches.
Victoria was waiting somewhere beyond them.
Emily smiled.
"I'm ready."
Outside, the garden had been transformed.
White flowers lined the aisle.
Soft music floated through the warm afternoon air.
Gabriel stood near the front, adjusting his tie for what felt like the hundredth time.
Walker leaned over.
"You've done that five times."
Gabriel grinned.
"I know."
"I'm the brother of the bride."
"I'm allowed to be nervous."
Walker laughed.
"I suppose you are."
Atlas proudly wandered between the chairs wearing a small white ribbon around her neck, accepting attention from every guest she passed.
Then the music changed.
Everyone stood.
Victoria appeared at the end of the aisle.
She wore an elegant white suit tailored perfectly for her, with a single white rose pinned to the lapel.
For a moment, she forgot everyone else was there.
She only saw Emily.
Emily felt her heart skip a beat.
"She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."
Victoria thought exactly the same.
As Emily reached the front, Father Michael smiled at them both.
"I have watched these two remarkable women walk through darkness."
He looked around at the guests.
"They found each other when neither believed love was possible."
"They taught each other forgiveness."
"They chose hope over fear."
"And today..."
"They choose each other."
Silence settled over the garden.
Only the gentle breeze moved through the branches above.
Father Michael turned toward Emily.
"Do you, Emily Carter, promise to stand beside Victoria through every joy and every hardship?"
Emily never looked away from Victoria.
"I do."
He turned to Victoria.
"And do you, Victoria Moretti, promise to love Emily with honesty, courage, and all your heart?"
Victoria smiled through tears.
"With all my heart."
"I do."
Gabriel stepped forward with the rings.
The simple platinum bands caught the afternoon sunlight.
Emily carefully slipped the ring onto Victoria's finger.
"This is my home."
Victoria smiled.
"And you are mine."
She placed Emily's ring on her hand.
"No matter where life takes us..."
"...I choose you."
"Every single day."
Father Michael's eyes glistened.
"By the promises you have made before those who love you..."
"...I now pronounce you wife and wife."
"You may kiss."
Emily didn't hesitate.
She gently cupped Victoria's face and kissed her as applause filled the garden.
Gabriel cheered the loudest.
Walker smiled and shook his head.
"I never thought I'd live to see this."
Atlas barked happily, making everyone laugh.
As the sun began to set, music filled the garden once more.
Friends laughed.
Glasses were raised.
Gabriel gave an emotional speech that made everyone cry before immediately making them laugh again.
Walker admitted that the first time he met Victoria, he had been convinced she would one day arrest him instead.
Victoria laughed harder than anyone.
Later, beneath strings of warm lights hanging from the oak tree, Emily found Victoria standing alone for a moment.
"Happy?"
Emily asked.
Victoria looked around at their family, their home, and the life they had built together.
She smiled.
"I spent years believing my story would end in darkness."
Emily took both of her hands.
"And now?"
Victoria leaned forward and kissed her gently.
"Now I know..."
"...this is where my real life begins."
Above them, the stars slowly appeared over the Hudson River.
The war was over.
The promises had been made.
And under the same oak tree where her father had once dreamed of a peaceful future...
Victoria Moretti finally found it.
