Morning arrived under a blanket of grey clouds.
Emily sat alone in her office at FBI Headquarters, staring at the photographs spread across her desk. The Atlas files, reports from the attack on the Moretti estate, and the anonymous picture of Victoria and Gabriel formed pieces of a puzzle that refused to fit together.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
Walker entered.
"I've got something."
He placed a sealed evidence bag on her desk.
Inside was a silver necklace.
Emily immediately recognized it.
"Victoria's."
Walker nodded.
"It was recovered from the apartment of a murdered federal informant."
Emily frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It doesn't," Walker agreed. "Which is exactly why it worries me."
Emily looked at the necklace again.
Someone wanted the FBI to believe Victoria had ordered the informant's death.
But something felt wrong.
Too perfect.
Too convenient.
Across the city, Victoria stood in the backyard of Isabella's safe house, practicing with a pistol.
Each shot struck the center of the target.
She wasn't trying to improve.
She was trying to silence her thoughts.
Luca approached quietly.
"You've fired almost two hundred rounds."
Victoria lowered the weapon.
"I need to think."
"You need to rest."
She shook her head.
"I'll rest when Gabriel is safe."
Luca hesitated.
"What if Volkov is lying?"
Victoria stared at the target.
"I've asked myself that every minute since the phone call."
She looked down at the pendant bearing Gabriel's initials.
"But if there's even a chance..."
"...I have to find him."
Later that afternoon, Emily received another anonymous package.
This time it contained a memory card.
She inserted it into her computer.
A video began to play.
The footage showed Victoria meeting a masked man in an underground parking garage.
The two exchanged a briefcase before walking away.
There was no audio.
Emily leaned closer.
The date stamp caught her attention.
It had been recorded...
Two nights ago.
Impossible.
Victoria had been trapped underground with Emily that entire night.
The footage had been manipulated.
Emily smiled to herself.
"Nice try."
Someone inside the FBI clearly wanted to frame Victoria.
Meanwhile, Volkov watched the same video on a large monitor.
One of his lieutenants looked confused.
"The agent didn't believe it."
Volkov remained calm.
"I know."
"So why send it?"
"Because doubt doesn't appear all at once."
He folded his hands.
"It grows."
"One lie."
"Then another."
"And eventually..."
"...people stop knowing what is true."
That evening, Emily drove alone to the safe house.
Victoria opened the door before Emily could knock.
"You look worried."
Emily held up the evidence bag.
"Have you ever seen this?"
Victoria's expression changed instantly.
"My mother's necklace."
Emily looked surprised.
"Your mother's?"
Victoria nodded.
"It disappeared the night she died."
Emily slowly handed it to her.
"So someone has kept it for twenty years."
Victoria turned the necklace over in her hand.
Inside the clasp was a tiny inscription she had never noticed before.
M + A
"My mother..."
She paused.
"And..."
Emily looked at her.
"And who?"
Victoria's face paled.
"My father's real name wasn't Moretti."
Emily frowned.
"What was it?"
Victoria whispered the name as though saying it aloud might awaken old ghosts.
"...Alessandro De Luca."
Emily froze.
"De Luca?"
Luca, standing in the hallway, looked just as shocked.
"My family name..."
"...is De Luca."
The room fell silent.
No one spoke.
The coincidence was too great.
Or perhaps...
It wasn't a coincidence at all.
Across the river, Gabriel stood on the roof of an abandoned factory, looking out over the lights of Manhattan.
Volkov joined him.
"You're thinking about her."
Gabriel didn't deny it.
"I remember pieces."
"A girl teaching me how to ride a bicycle."
"A woman singing."
"A garden."
He closed his eyes.
"I don't know if they're real memories..."
"...or memories you've given me."
Volkov's smile faded for just a moment.
"Memory is fragile."
Gabriel turned toward him.
"So is trust."
For the first time, Volkov saw something he hadn't expected.
Gabriel was beginning to question him.
And that was dangerous.
Very dangerous.
Far below, another storm rolled toward New York.
As thunder echoed across the city, Emily and Victoria unknowingly took another step closer to uncovering the truth that had been hidden for two decades.
And once that truth came to light...
None of their lives would ever be the same.
