Chapter 2

The Encounter

While I waited for my order, I took out my computer to check my emails and to begin my job search. Shortly thereafter, as I was scrolling through a listing of jobs, I was caught off guard, and my thoughts were interrupted when a man walked up to my table. I have shared a table with strangers on crowded days, so I assumed he was going to ask to sit with me. He appeared to be in his late thirties, wearing glasses and sporting salt-and-pepper hair, which didn't look authentically gray.

Despite the oversized sweater layered over a polo shirt, with loose cargo pants and loafers, I perceived that he was in good physical shape and followed a healthy diet; possibly a vegan. Although he gives off an unsettling vibe, which makes me consider the possibility of him being a narcissist or a stalker, I dismissed the thought (this was my first mistake). He then asks if he may join me at my table.

"Hello, young lady. Would you mind sharing your table with me? I placed my order and was waiting for an available table."

"Hi. No, I don't mind at all. It's more crowded in here than usual. Do you live around here? I haven't seen you come in here before."

"I am new to this town, but I decided to drive around to familiarize myself with the area and some of the people. I noticed the long line outside, which I assumed it meant the coffee and service were very good here. By the way, my name is Allen?..and your name?"

He had a smile that lit up the room, as bright as the sun, and a personality that made anyone feel at home. For a moment, I found myself completely lost in his gaze and feeling rather enthralled by his charm (but looks can be deceiving; this was my 2nd mistake).

"Oh, uh?...it's a pleasure to meet you, Allen. My name is Lola, and I have lived here most of my life. I graduated from college a few months ago and am looking for a full-time job. I work at a community center part-time?it's not much, but it pays the bills."

In that moment, a little voice in my head was whispering that I probably shouldn't have mentioned I worked at a community center (this was my 3rd mistake; it was a big one). He had that vibe; you know, the kind of guy who would be obsessed with me and try to track me down to find out where I work or live.

"You possess a beautiful name and face, Lola. Congratulations on completing your education; I know it was not an easy journey. What's your major?"

"No, it wasn't easy, but I remained persistent and determined. I hold a master's degree in psychology. However, the most challenging aspect is finding work in a small town. I realized I may need to relocate to another city or state if necessary."

"Indeed, it's not simple, but with a little perseverance, things will work out for you. I retired from the military and am now self-employed. I have invested my money in stocks and bonds. I am considering starting a business, perhaps a consulting firm, but I'm not certain at the moment.
