I remember working as a host at Bosselman’s truck stop along I-70 in Salina, Kansas.
I dressed differently for work back then—dress shoes, black pants, a white button-down shirt, and a bow tie. I worked Monday through Friday and occasionally on weekends.
One morning, a homeless couple walked into the truck stop.
I could tell just by looking at them that they were struggling. They approached the counter and asked if there was any way they could get something to eat.
I didn't hesitate.
“Sure. Order what you want, and I'll pay for it.”
To me, it was simple. They were hungry. I had the ability to help.
But before I could pay for their food, my boss came over.
“Jeffrey, that's not your responsibility.”
I looked at him and said, “I know it's not my responsibility. It's something in my heart that I need to do. They need something to eat.”
There was a reason hunger affected me differently.
I knew what it felt like to be hungry.
As a child, I had lived with abusive foster parents who would lock me inside a dark room.
I remember one particular time when I was so hungry that when they finally let me out to use the bathroom, I noticed a bag of dog food sitting in the utility room.
I grabbed a handful.
I put it into my little pockets.
And I went back into that room.
Years later, standing inside that truck stop looking at two hungry strangers, I wasn't thinking about whether feeding them was written somewhere in my job description.
I knew what hunger felt like when nobody came to help.
Then my boss told me the couple had to leave.
I did what I was instructed to do and escorted them outside.
I watched them leave.
Then I returned to my station.
But something inside me wouldn't let the moment go.
I felt sad.
Defeated.
I had been close enough to help—and I had watched two hungry people walk away.
I took a deep breath.
Then I walked out the door.
In the distance, I could see the couple walking along I-70.
I started after them.
“Wait!”
They stopped and turned around.
When I finally reached them, they looked at me and asked, “Why are you here?”
I told them:
“Because it's the right thing to do.”
They reminded me that they weren't my responsibility.
“I know,” I told them. “But in my heart, I feel like this is the right thing to do.”
I reached into my billfold and pulled out a twenty-dollar bill.
When I handed it to the woman, her eyes grew wide.
She began to tear up.
I hugged her and told her, “It's going to be okay.”
When we separated, she asked me something I have never forgotten.
“How can I repay you?”
I held her hand.
“You don't have to repay me,” I told her. “Everyone on this earth is an angel. Before I was born, maybe you were an angel helping somebody else. Today, it's my turn to be an angel and help you and your husband.”
She looked at the twenty dollars I had just given her.
“But what can I do for you? This is all I have.”
I told her there was one thing she could give me.
A promise.
“When somebody else needs help, plant a positive seed in their heart, their mind, and their soul. Let that seed of love continue to grow inside them. Be kind. Be humble. And just be yourself.
“Do that, and you've repaid me.”
She hugged me one more time.
Then she and her husband continued walking up the road.
I stood there watching them disappear into the distance.
I never saw those two angels again.
Now I had another walk to make.
About half a mile back to the truck stop.
And with every step, I had plenty of time to think about what I was going to say to my boss.
When I reached the truck stop, he was waiting for me inside.
The moment I opened the door, he said:
“Jeffrey. I want you in my office. Right now.”
I sat down.
He was upset.
“Jeffrey, why did you do what you did?”
For a moment, I gathered my thoughts.
Then I gave him the same answer.
“I know it wasn't my responsibility.
But in my heart, it was the right thing to do.”
I stood up.
“Where are you going?” he asked.
“I quit.”
He reminded me that I had worked there for two years. My coworkers liked me. I was a good employee.
But this wasn't about whether I was a good employee anymore.
I told him what I had realized that morning.
“I saw your true colors when that homeless couple walked through those doors. I was looking for a leader, not just a boss.”
Then I told him something much more personal.
I had grown up without a family.
Part of me had been looking for a role model in him.
And that morning, I realized I couldn't find one there.
“This isn't my calling.”
Then I walked out.
And I never returned.
I lost a job that day.
But I walked away understanding something about myself that would follow me for the rest of my life:
Compassion doesn't begin when something becomes your responsibility.
Sometimes compassion begins when you know it isn't your responsibility—and you choose to help anyway.
