Her past had never been gentle with her.
It had left behind scars she could not always explain, memories she wished she could erase, and little flashes of pain that returned when she least expected them.
Some days, she could go about her life as though nothing had happened.
Other days, the smallest reminder was enough to take her back to a place she had fought so hard to leave.
Her past was not pretty.
And neither were some of the people who had been part of it.
The relationships she had experienced before were, for the most part, lessons she had never asked to learn. Some people had taken more from her than they had ever given. Others had left her questioning whether love was supposed to feel so exhausting.
She had dated men and women alike.
Her sexuality was never something she felt she needed to explain to the world. Gender had never been the boundary that determined whom she could love. She was drawn to people for who they were, for their personalities, their hearts, and the little things that made them uniquely themselves.
She loved people for being people.
Unfortunately, loving someone did not always mean that they were right for her.
One by one, relationships came and went. Some ended with disappointment, others with hurt, and a few left wounds that took far longer to heal than she had anticipated.
Still, she never completely closed her heart to love.
Perhaps she was hopeful.
Perhaps she was stubborn.
Or perhaps there was a part of her that simply refused to believe that the wrong people she had met were all the world had to offer.
Whatever the reason, she kept going.
And then, when she least expected it, someone came along who made her see things differently.
A gentleman.
He was sweet and gentle with her, yet firm in his convictions. He had a certain assertiveness about him, a confidence that made it clear he knew what he wanted. Of course, he had his flaws too. He could be hard-headed, sometimes stubborn, and not always the easiest person to reason with.
But there was something about him that felt different.
He did not simply make her feel wanted. He made her feel chosen.
He knew what he wanted, and he was willing to make his intentions known. There was a certainty in the way he pursued her, a determination that made her feel as though she was no longer competing for a place in someone's heart.
For once, she allowed herself to believe that perhaps love did not always have to end in disappointment.
She fell in love.
Really, truly fell in love.
And unlike the relationships that had come before, this one became a chapter of her life she knew she would carry with her for a long time.
He became part of her story in a way she had never imagined.
He showed her that love could feel different from what she had known. He reminded her that she was capable of opening her heart again, even after everything she had been through.
Perhaps that was what made their connection so meaningful.
It was not that her past had suddenly become less painful. It was not that every wound had disappeared the moment he entered her life.
It was that, for the first time in a long time, she could imagine a future without allowing her past to dictate what it would look like.
If she were ever given another lifetime, she thought, perhaps she would still search for someone who carried the qualities she had come to love in him.
Perhaps she would still choose him.
All over again.
But life has a way of reminding us that even the sweetest chapters can come with their own storms.
And no matter how much we love someone, we must never forget the person we were before they arrived.
Because love should add to your life, not erase the parts of you that make you who you are.
Life will not always be kind.
Some storms will arrive without warning. Some days will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about yourself.
But you must keep your head up, girl.
Do not allow the things that happened yesterday to rob you of the person you can become tomorrow.
Your past may explain some of your fears, but it does not have to determine your future.
You are allowed to grow beyond your mistakes.
You are allowed to outgrow the people you once thought you could never live without.
You are allowed to become someone your younger self would be proud of.
And above all, you are allowed to begin again.
Because change is constant.
And so are you, in all the ways you have yet to discover.
