The night was quiet, the city lights spilling through Maya's window like tired stars. Adrian stood by the balcony, clutching one of her letters. He had read enough to feel the weight of every unsent word, every lonely night she had endured without him.
"Maya," he whispered, turning toward her. "I came back because I couldn't breathe without you. I know I failed you. I know I wasn't here when you needed me. But if you'll let me… I'll spend the rest of my life proving I'm not far from you anymore."
Maya looked at him for a long time, her eyes unreadable. Part of her wanted to collapse into his arms, to let the years of love swallow the ache. Another part remembered the endless nights of silence, the ache of waiting for a voice that never came.
She walked to him, close enough that she could feel the warmth of him, close enough to remember what it felt like to be his. Her hand rose, trembling, and pressed against his chest where his heart raced beneath her touch.
"I loved you through everything," she said softly. "Even when it hurt. Even when you felt like a ghost. But love isn't just about surviving the distance. It's about being there."
Tears slipped down Adrian's cheeks, but he didn't move, afraid even his breath might shatter this fragile moment.
Maya leaned in, pressing her forehead to his. For a second, the world fell away - the letters, the years, the silence. It was just them, like it had been at the train station, before everything broke.
"You were always far from me," she whispered. "But right now… you're here."
And then, slowly, she kissed him.
It wasn't desperate, like the last kiss they shared at the station. It was steady, fragile, and new. A promise not of perfection, but of beginning again.
When their lips parted, Maya's tears fell freely, and Adrian held her as though he'd never let go again.
For the first time in years, the distance was gone.
