The obsidian beneath Lyra’s palm did not merely warm; it turned to molten glass.
Her sovereign Weave-sense surged downward through the four tiers of the pyramid, tearing through the artificial runic seals Kenneth had carved into the foundation. She didn't seek to crack the stone—she awakened the dormant volcanic vein trapped deep beneath the flooded bedrock. The true magma of the western shelf recognized the bloodline of the Ash Court, answering her call with a deep, subterranean roar that shook the very pillars of the subterranean fortress.
The apex of the pyramid buckled.
The twelve runic silver chains tethering Alpha Conlan went slack as the brass mooring plates in the floor snapped like brittle twigs.
Before Kenneth could drive his black-glass rapier through Conlan’s exposed throat, the floor beneath the high platform tilted violently. The twelve robed sorcerers lost their footing, sliding into the churning, boiling water below where Talia and the freed northern warriors were waiting with bare steel.
Kenneth snarled, lunging forward with his rapier in a desperate, spiteful thrust aimed straight for the old wolf’s heart.
He never reached him.
Gideon bridged the eighty feet between the pyramid tiers in a single, earth-shattering leap.
He didn't draw a blade; he hit the platform like a falling meteor, his armored shoulder slamming into Kenneth’s gilded chest plate with concussive force. The impact tore through the iron railing, sending both warlords crashing across the polished brass tiles of the high gallery in a tangled knot of flying shrapnel and shattered stone.
Kenneth rolled with fluid, predatory grace, his gilded cloak tearing away as he came to his feet. His silver-blond hair was wild, his lips peeled back over sharp, aristocratic fangs, his black-glass rapier humming with a lethal, high-frequency screech.
"You think you’re an Alpha, Gideon?" Kenneth hissed, circling with light, serpentine footsteps. "You're an unwashed northern cur clinging to the skirts of a dead house! You have no lineage! No court! Nothing but ash and snow!"
"I have enough," Gideon growled, rising slowly to his full height.
The northern warlord did not draw his claymores. He rolled his colossal shoulders, the muscles along his thick neck knotting as he discarded his weapons, letting them clatter onto the brass floorboards. His scarred palms were still blackened from the poisoned silver of the automatons, but his amber-gold eyes burned with pure, unadulterated savagery.
"I have two bare hands," Gideon rumbled, his voice dropping into that dark, terrifying bass that vibrated through the marrow of Kenneth’s bones. "And your throat."
Kenneth lunged.
The southern Alpha moved with blinding, unnatural speed—a strike honed by centuries of court fencing and abyssal blood-rites. The black-glass rapier flickered like a tongue of dark lightning, aimed directly for Gideon’s left eye.
Gideon didn't parry. He tilted his head a fraction of an inch.
The razor-sharp point of the glass blade sliced deep along his cheekbone, opening a fresh crimson gash across the old scar, the poisoned glass hissing as it met his blood.
Gideon didn't even flinch.
The instant the blade passed his cheek, Gideon’s left hand shot out like an iron vice, clamping shut around Kenneth’s wrist. Bones ground together with a sickening crunch beneath his grip, shattering the delicate bones of the high alpha’s sword-hand.
Kenneth shrieked, the rapier slipping from his paralyzed fingers to shatter on the tiles below.
Before the southern lord could shift or strike with his off-hand, Gideon’s right fist drove straight into his sternum.
The blow hit with the force of a battering ram. The gilded obsidian plate caved inward, cracking the ribs beneath, lifting Kenneth clean off the floor and pinning him hard against the basalt wall behind the high seat.
Kenneth choked, dark blood and bile spewing from his lips, his feet dangling two feet above the tiles as Gideon’s massive hand shifted to wrap around his throat.
"The... the toll..." Kenneth wheezed, his fingers clawing frantically at the immovable iron band of Gideon’s forearm, his eyes bulging in terror as he looked into the unblinking, golden void of the warlord’s gaze. "The Abyssal Mother... already... has the heart... You can't... stop the tide..."
"I don't need to stop the tide, Kenneth," Gideon whispered, leaning in until his breath was hot against the high alpha's ear, his voice quiet, merciless, and final.
"I just need to drown you."
With a brutal, single-motion twist of his massive wrist, Gideon snapped High Alpha Kenneth’s neck.
The sickening crack echoed through the high gallery, sharp and absolute. Gideon released his grip, letting the lifeless body of the southern lord crumple into a heap of broken silk and crushed armor at the base of the wall.
Across the chamber, the fighting ceased.
The remaining southern guards on the catwalks threw down their weapons in terror, fleeing toward the upper fortress stairwells as the water below continued to rise.
At the apex of the obsidian pyramid, Lyra knelt beside the massive form of Alpha Conlan.
Her daggers were sheathed; her small, gentle hands rested against the spiked iron muzzle clamped over the old wolf's jaws. With a focused pulse of celestial violet starlight, she melted the locking pins, lifting the heavy iron mask away from his face.
Conlan drew his first clean breath in four winters.
His emaciated chest heaved, his cloudy, blind amber eyes blinking against the steam. His massive, scarred snout twitched, catching the familiar, unmistakable scent of mountain cedar, wild starlight, and the untamed fire of the Drake bloodline.
"Lyra...?" the old wolf rasped, his voice a dry, gravelly whisper that barely carried over the hissing forge.
"I'm here, Uncle," Lyra said softly, her thumb gently brushing the scarred bridge of his nose.
Heavy, hurried boots sounded on the stone stairs behind her.
Gideon reached the apex of the pyramid in three strides, dropping heavily to his knees beside the ancient wolf. He reached out, his massive, scarred hands—still trembling with the lingering adrenaline of the kill—gently cupping the old warrior’s broad skull, pulling Conlan’s forehead against his own.
"I’m here, old man," Gideon rumbled, his deep bass cracking with a raw, fierce emotion he rarely showed. "The North is free. And we’re taking you home."
Conlan let out a low, shuddering whine, his head resting heavily against his nephew’s chest, the long winter of his captivity finally broken.
Lyra rose to her feet, turning her gaze toward the center of the pyramid floor.
With Kenneth dead, the molten crucible of star-iron had begun to cool, its surface turning dark and brittle. But beneath the stone, the Third Anchor still pulsed with that stubborn, parasitic violet luminescence, trying to maintain its grip on the continental shelf.
Lyra reached down, her hand finding Gideon’s broad shoulder.
He looked up, meeting her dual-colored gaze. The understanding between them was instant, seamless, and forged in blood. Gideon stood, placing his large, calloused hand over hers atop the stone.
Together, they channeled the conjoined flame of their true-mate bond directly into the heart of the crucible.
The Third Anchor detonated from within.
A blinding pillar of white-hot magma erupted from the center of the pyramid, shooting straight up through the cavern ceiling, tearing through eighty feet of solid basalt to vent into the open air of the fortress courtyard above.
The inversion engine shattered.
The unnatural, freezing cold that had gripped the bay for leagues vanished in a roaring wave of clean, volcanic steam. High above the fortress cliffs, the trumpet-call of Cinder echoed through the sky, answering the pillar of fire as the third link in the Abyssal Mother's chain crumbled into ash.
